Molly - when I took BCPs, I don't remember my weight changing in either direction...the only side effect was that my AFs became regular (a good thing!)

Depends on which pill you're asking about. Ortho Tri Cyclen made me gain weight and Mircette made me lose weight. Everyone reacts differently to every pill, so it's mostly a matter of figuring out which one works for you.
When I first started BCP, I lost about 10lb. I don't know if the BCP caused it though. I've gained that 10lb. back. I've been roughly maintaining the same weight otherwise.

Thanks, I use to take Ortho Tri Cyclen and I went down to 123, now sure if that's because of the pill or what, seriously i have gained over 80 pounds since going off the pill, so I am trying to figure this all out!
Thanks!

Most women seem to claim the pill causes them to gain weight or at least makes weight loss more difficult - but there are women who lose weight on the pill or find the pill has no effect.
Progesterone (progestin in the pill) can worsen IR - hence cravings, weight gain, etc during PMS (when progesterone is high) BUT estrogen tends to temper this effect somewhat (or so I have read in "It's My Ovaries, Stupid" by Elizabeth Vliet) AND different pills have different progestin types and potencies.
I have often blamed weight gain on the pill - but if I were honest I really think I was just using the pill as a scapegoat. But I do think that, generally speaking, the pill makes it harder for me to lose weight.
For me, an exception was Alesse - I was able to lose weight on Alesse rather easily. But then again I was being very good about my diet at the point in my life I was on it, so...
The only way to find out is to try...

And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip..."

I wondered this too. I gained weight (15 lbs, which I am small so that was a lot) on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen and I had never gained weight in my life at that time and as soon as I quit taking it, it melted away. No diet changes or exercise changes either. It also did not help my pcos symptoms at all (that was before I even knew I had it but I remember it did not help my acne). I have been prescribed Ortho Cyclen but I am afraid to take it because I do not want to gain weight again. I am still trying to lose the last 10 lbs of baby weight.

i'm not familiar with ortho tri cyclen, but i do know that yasmin contains a small amount of drospirenone, which is made from spironolactone, which is an anti-androgen that can be useful in treating excess hair growth, hair loss, acne, etc. this is why yasmin is used by a lot of women with PCOS. i also take an extra 100 mg of spironolactone every day. other BCPs contain progestins with androgen properties, which could cause problems like excess hair growth etc. yasmin does not have this. hope this helps!
Thanks Sarah, ok now I want that!!! I have ortho-cyclen, it is a little different than ortho-tri-cyclen. I saw a website that said it is ok for pcos (yasmin was in the same category) but I am scared of the weight gain like I had with the ortho-tri-cyclen before. Hmmmm...I guess I will just have to try it and see.

Yasmin is just different because of the synthetic progestin componet. A non-synthetic progestin is what can cause weight gain and androgenic activity in other BCPs i think. ortho-cyclen does not have changing estrogen levels as the weeks go on, I believe, and I think this makes it more tolerable for some women. Yasmin changes levels every seven days.
It never affected my weight until they put me on Yasmin recently. I lost six pounds almost immediately, all water weight, because Yasmin is a mild diuretic. About ten more to go!
I've been on tons of different BCP's over the years (I am currently on Ortho-Cyclen), and do not believe that they have affected my weight either way as far as causing me to gain or lose. However, I do sort of suspect that they may make it a little more difficult to lose weight.
