I'm confused. I'm trying to eliminate soy from my diet since it has an estrogenic effect. How and why does soy help if you are ttc?

cheech:

women with PCOS may often be "estrogen dominant". when your body "senses" that it is oversaturated with estrogen, ovulation will be suppressed. normally (in the absence of estrogen dominance), ovulation is "triggered" when estrogen and progesterone drop toward the end of the last month's menstrual cycle. in response to low estrogen, the body produces increased amounts of FSH, which causes a rise in estrogen and, subsequently, LH. this LH surge triggers ovulation and the sudden fall in estrogen is followed by an increase in progesterone. progesterone is produced by the luteal body (aka corpus luteum), which is what is left of the follicle after the egg is released.

if, however, estrogen is too high, the body never signals for the production and release of FSH, and LH remains constantly high (this is why OPKs often don't work for women with PCOS - OPKs test for LH). drugs like clomid and substances like soy isoflavones, if taken for a short duration, may "trick" the body into thinking estrogen levels are low (they do this by binding to estrogen receptors on cells' surfaces), trigger the release of FSH, and start the cycle of ovulation in this way.

i did not vote in the poll. i had two wacky cycles over the summer and i used soy to trigger ovulation for two cycles after that. since then, my cycles have been normal (and ovulatory) on their own. i don't know for sure of soy worked for me, or if it was diet/weight loss/supplements alone. whatever the soy did, it didn't hurt any!

Thank you all for your answers! I am about to try it myself.

Just to clarify things: we are talking about soy isoflavones.

There is another thread going on about it for over a year. Have a look!

I took soy on my third cycle of clomid and nothing happend. On my last round of clomid i did soy days 1-4 the clomid 5-9. I had a 34 day cycle then this last time i did soy by itself and had a 28 day cycle. I did soy again this time and we will see what happens.

AF for me doesn't come unless i take BCP or Prometrium, so i think the soy is working, we are just missing O.

Were you taking Estroven?? I am taking one of those, and also 80mg of soy iso's too, so like 160mg of soy total. I am hoping this works. If you were not taking estroven, what brand did you take?

Moxie - Thanks for the donation. I am still quite new to the site and have not figured out how to use the bank and donations. Were in the site can I get the info? I would like to spread my best wishes and sympathy to a couple of threads I am also on. I do think it makes a difference and things like that always brighten my day.

Well, it worked in that I conceived the month I bought soy to use in the following cycle. Maybe the soy scared my body into working.
