Default Did synthroid or any hypo medication help you with your hormones?

So I have been on synthroid for about a week, I feel so much better but my DR is giving me a 3 month test run to see if my cycles regulate. If theres no change he wont refill the synthroid because with a level of 4.41 Im "borderline".

So did any of you have your cycles regulate with hypothyroid medication? I am also on met (have been on it for years) and I eat fairly healthy and whatnot. Just wondering if synthroid helped anyone with their hormones!

I've been on synthoid since Oct 2007....the first couple of months I noticed I had alot more energy but now it seems like the only reason for me to take it was because I'm less grumpy...lol
Haven't noticed change in cycles...yaz is the only thing making me regular right now.
sorry couldn't help more:-(

For me unfortunately synthroid has not helped me have periods and I have been on it for 3yrs. Hopefully for you though it will work. Maybe if it doesn't though you should ask your doc. if you can stay on the synthroid since it is helping you feel better. That is definitely a positive thing!!!! God Bless. Keep us updated.

When I first started Synthroid several years ago, it didn't make a difference in my cycles. But I also had thyroid cancer (unknown at the time). Once we got my thyroid under control though, I am pretty close to clockwork.

It should make a difference if that is the only thing wrong. Sometimes getting your thyroid back in check can really help your PCOS (like it did for me), but other times there are other factors too that you will need to correct as well.

I've been on Armour Thyroid, which is a natural, bio-identical thyroid medication for about a month now. I don't know what it's doing for my hormones but I feel so good it's crazy! I started a natural progesterone prescription yesterday that, in combination with the Armour, is supposed to regulate not only my estrogen/testosterone imbalance but also help address my adrenal fatigue. I treat insulin resistance with diet/exercise and with the other treatments in place it's a lot easier than it used to be and IT'S WORKING! I refuse to ever take Met again, regardless of my insulin levels, etc because it makes me sick and run down so I have no choice but to treat with diet/exercise. It's a little more motivating than taking those pills.

hey pandora, that sounds great! im glad you're making progress. i had my blood drawn a few days ago for similar labs. i was wondering if you've been suffering gut issues? since that's my main problem-- severe constipation. the whacky hormones and facial hair doesn't help it either.

Pandora- That is great. When I first found out I had thyroid problems they started me on Armour and I only took that for a year b/c it helped me feel better but wasn't doing the complete job so they switched me to synthroid and WOW what a difference. I was also on progesterone cream and LOVED it. It made me feel so much, and I was actually having periods again. Unfortunately the doctor was 2hours away and I had some other issues with some WEIRD things he was doing that I didn't believe in so I no longer see him and no one where I live will RX the cream so unfortunately I am just taking prometruim every other month to have a withdrawal bleed. I am so glad the cream is working for you, that is so great to hear that someone else is trying other things then met....... the met made me horribly sick too. Thankfully all my glucose/insulin levels are normal and have been for 10yrs now,for me my test, estro, proges, are completely out of wack! After 8 doctors though and none helping (except the cream one) we are done with doctors!!! I didn't know if you know this but you can only use the cream for 5years maximum then you have to stop it for awhile. Did you know that????

"i was wondering if you've been suffering gut issues? since that's my main problem-- severe constipation. the whacky hormones and facial hair doesn't help it either.

I used to have alternating bowels - constipation then diarrhea and back again. Since I did the candida yeast cleanse and started the armour, I have not had that problem at all anymore. I am really surprised about that. But the doctor told me that constipation is a symptom of hypothyroid and the alternating is a symptom of the candida so I guess it makes sense. It's just that I had been living with that for so long it had become normal to me.

"After 8 doctors though and none helping (except the cream one) we are done with doctors!!! I didn't know if you know this but you can only use the cream for 5years maximum then you have to stop it for awhile. Did you know that????"

I understand what you mean about being done with doctors. I took a few years off of seeing doctors too. Then I went back and became a guinea pig for awhile. If this doctor hadn't actually helped me, I would be doing the same thing again and not seeing any doctors. I haven't heard anything about not being able to use the cream after 5 years. Were you using the natural or synthetic progesterone cream? Because I know someone who used the synthetic progesterone cream to get pregnant and it made her really sick while she was using it. Everything I've read or the doctors have told me about the natural, bio-identical progesterone cream has led me to believe I can use it indefinitely. This progesterone is formulated in a compounding pharmacy to match my own identically so I don't see why I would have a limit on how long it's okay to use. This is actually the first month I've used it. Since I started using it, I feel like I've hit a plateau. I haven't got worse again, but I haven't got better either. Monday will be my 14th day and then I'm supposed to start a/f after that. I'm wondering if this is just a normal plateau (my doctor warned that I was making good progress but that it would take longer than I seemed to think to get to 100%) or if it is caused by the progesterone. I guess I'll know when I'm done with my 14th day. However, I usually get major migraines the week before a/f and although I've had a couple minor, annoying headaches I haven't had any migraines yet!

would high progesterone lower the high testosterone or make its effect less powerful? and have you noticed any improvements in facial hair and skin? thanks!

Pandora- I was on the natural progestrone cream that I got compounded at the compounding pharmacy. My mom was actually on it too for her menopause symptoms and that is when I first learned you can only be on it for 5years and then you have to stop it for awhile. I don't remember the reason the doctor gave me or her (we were seeing the same hormones specialist at the time) but I will find out and let you know. Also, when I researched it on the net I found it on there too that you can only take it for 5yrs maximum,as well as my compounded pharmacist told me that too.
I never plateaued per say, almost every month I was still having to adjust the dose based upon my bloodwork and my symptoms so even when I stopped the cream I was still adjusting it.
As far as the constipation I haven't had a problem with that w/ my thyroid or my hormones either. I was the other way with IBS being an issue when I would get stressed.Until I started drinking 3oz of Aloe Vera Gel in organice juice daily, and eating Fiber One Cereal or Kashi every morning for breakfast. Both of those have helped regulate my bowels.

Postmortem,

The nurse practitioner at my doctor's office told me that raising my progesterone should lower the testosterone and offset its effects. I have noticed a tremendous difference in my skin (and so has everyone else) and I've recently started to notice a minor difference in the hirsutism. I attributed the skin to the new, healthy diet but since I've started the progesterone my skin seems to glow even more. No pimples at all! I used to have what almost looked like a rash on my forehead - like a thousand little pimples - and it's completely gone!

Ella 831,

Wow! I did not know that at all. I'm going to ask my doctor about it. Do you know how long of a break you are supposed to take from the progesterone cream? Is it the same with the natural progesterone pills? I've heard lots of good things about aloe vera juice. I plan on trying it when my series of appointments is all finished. Eating a high fiber diet helped me a lot too. I've been doing that for over a year now and my cholesterol has come down from 267 to 209! This was before I saw this doctor. Even with a high fiber diet, I experienced the alternating diarrhea and constipation. It really was the candida yeast for me probably. If you are just getting constipated on a high fiber diet, all you need to do is drink lots of water. It works wonders. I want to stick with only doing what my doctor tells me until it's all solidified because that way I'll know that it's his treatments that are helping me and not something I've done on my own. I'm putting him to the test so to speak.

Welll I have been on Synthroid for about 5 months and I got my first real period without Provera(Progesterone) and it only last 5 days. I don't know for sure if I am regular now or if its a fluke. I was just above borderline at like 5-7 I can't remember for sure but my endo checked me for Hashimotos Thyroiditis and I did have it so she said I had to start the Synthroid now because no matter what we do my thyroid was going to stop working eventually. Sorry off topic, just sugesting you get checked for that its pretty common in woman with PCOS to have my doc told me. I had to have my Sythroid upped in March but I feel better and like I said I had a real period like a real girl, lol. Talk to your talk and let him know you want to try the Synthroid longer if it doesn't work right away. Good luck I hope it works for you.

Pandora-Ok so far here is what I found out about the natural cream, some doctors believe you have to take a break from it in 5yrs b/c your body can get to use to it. Not all doctors believe that though so your doctor might believe you can take it indefinitely!!!! The doctor I was seeing who had me on it wanted me to break for about 6months in 5years. So it is really up to your doctor and what they believe.
That is awesome your skin is glowing.I had the same effect when I was on it too. My acne cleared up and my hair growth slowed too. I felt so good on it. I wasn't moody, or tired all the time. It made me pee alot which apparently is a good thing b/c it was helping me to get rid of all the excess water weight. That was the only thing I didn't like about it was I was going to the bathroom non stop. Other than that it was awesome!!!
