Question Did you ask for your Met prescription?

Hi,

I'm sure this has already been asked and I tried searching the forums but didn't find anything exactly answering this.

I'm just wondering if any of you ladies ASKED your doc for the rx, or if it was suggested to you?

The dr. who diagnosed me with PCOS suggested taking Met if my fasting insulin levels indicated impaired glucose tolerance (or whatever.....pre-diabetes), but at that time they were still w/in normal range (but barely--97) so we waited. My new doctor however, restested last fall and said I was normal even though my fasting went up and put me in the 'prediabetic' category at 115.

If Met is unnecessary, that's fine, but I don't understand why one doc would tell me about it before she even did the bloodwork, and the other one, after seeing abnormal results, would tell me I was normal and never mention Met or anything at all!

I asked for it.

PCOS and IR runs in my family.

My doc had me start on BCP's and Spiro, and then after a few months, I asked if she thought Met would help. And she said it's worth a shot.

It was suggested to me; had it not been, I probably would have asked.

My RE took me off it due to bad s/e's. I changed my diet and told her I wanted to try it again, and she refused. I asked my PCP to prescribe it, and he did.

My RE suggested it. I would have never had heard of it if it wasn't for SC. Luckily, I didn't need to ask or beg for it. He knows I need it.

I asked for it. I have normal insulin and glucose levels, too (mine is 89). But I'm taking Metformin for the cysts and abnormal androgen (hormones).

So as you can see, you don't have to have IR in order to take Metformin. Also, it'd be a GREAT preventative measure so that it does not develop into diabetes or insulin resistance.

I just got my prescript today and took my first pill. She started me off at 250 mg since I don't have the IR and she will slowly up the dosage.

I asked for it. Knowing that my cheapo clinic would never do it for prediabetes, I asked about it for treating hirsutism, and my new doctor agreed.

My gyne didn't test for insulin resistance, just said my bloodwork suggested PCOS and said I should try metformin. It seems to be working for me. My cycles have gone from 40+ days to 26-31 days and I think I'm even ovulating now. Not everyone will offer it or believe in it because the studies are still up in the air - some show it helps others that it doesn't. I think if you are able to wait a few months it is worth a shot. I really don't like waiting, but the side effect are minimum and it seems to be working.

My OBGYN put me on it when I was TTC. Since it regulated my cycles really quickly and I got pg within three months, he said he'd put me back on it again after I was done being pg.

Well, we both forgot, until a few months ago, I got fed up with the PCOS symptoms and called and asked for it. I also just asked for a dosage increase, too, though I didn't stick with the increased dosage because of the side effects.

I asked for it with each of my pregnancys and then this time. Each time they said yes and we agreed on a dosage after I showed them the research I found.

Yep. I went to an endo for the first time because I thought there was a problem with my thyroid along with my PCOS. I also had heard a lot of good things from a friend taking Met who also has PCOS. So I asked the endo and he put me on 750mg twice a day. I was so happy when I left that office I almost skipped to my car. LOL

i asked this time around, first time though my doctor suggested it and gave me a schedule to have sex and within 3 months i was pregnant. its been 5 yrs since i have been on it and my symptosm were starting to hit me bad so i asked to be put back on, so he prescribed it and then did the blood work which he said showed i had the pcos, and i was lieke duh! i told ya that. so if you doc says no , if you can get another one to do it. it will make you feel better and the side effects dont last forever. good luck.

I asked my ob/gyn for it too because my sister was taking it. I first asked my nurse practitioner but she wanted the ob to prescribe it. Had the Ob said no, the NP would have. I didn't notice too much difference except the dark patches of skin under my arms went away.
