My Mood: Points: 7,537.14 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 7,537.14 | I ended up asking for it from my OB, after doing my own research. If she hadn't given it to me I was going to have her refer me to a RE.
I had found about Met from my Endo, he said he would give it to me, but he wanted me to see what my body would do on NO MEDS! I was really fed up with that, so went to my OB instead.

If you feel like you're not being heard, I would get a second and third opinion. That's what a lot of us had to do... |

Points: 2,117.39 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,117.39 | I was only offered Provera when I was diagnosed. I started getting fed up with the symptoms, and when I did research I saw a lot of people were on other things, like Metformin. I'm a college student, so I called my doctor up and told her I wanted something more, and I asked to be put on Metformin. I had a blood test, and afterwards she said I could still go on Metformin, but strongly erred towards Yasmin. I had to basically call the doctor's off everyday to get put on it. I start Met tommorow - 1000 mg (500 mg 2x a day). |

I had an appointment for Provera last week and I brought up Met and she immediately agreed. It seemed to be a happy medium between Clomid and nothing. But she did not prescribe it to help me get PG. She perscribed it for the excess hair, acne, weight & lack of menstration. Keeping in mind that I have not had a non-drug induced menstration for 4 years. And I am getting sick of the provera every 3-4 months.
So I asked and I am happy I did... even though I feel SICK ALL THE TIME. But it's only been a week.

My Mood: Points: 4,074.69 Bank: 3,322.04 Total Points: 7,396.73 | I went in for a yearly with a new dr. The first thing she said to me after saying 'Hi' and introducing herself was that she could give me a medication that could help me get rid of my belly. Wasn't exactly what I expected to hear. That office visit wound up being around an hour and a half. She never once mentioned the name of the drug or PCOS. I had never heard about PCOS until I got the Met and did a search for it on the net and found that it was used for treatment of PCOS. I read up on the symptoms, and was like 'OMG, now I know I'm not a mental case after all these years.' She also went over medical history, gave me a Rx for celexa, did tons of blood work, gave me info on a home solution to get rid of a huge skin tag, and had me come back the next day for a fasting glucose. A few days later, I got an information pamplet in the mail about PCOS. Guess she wanted to review the test results before telling me.
I had already known for years that I was borderline diabetic.

My Mood: Points: 1,031.13 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,031.13 | I was just put on Met yesterday. My doctor made the diagnosis of PCOS for certain yesterday and she suggested Met, although she said it was up to me if I wanted to start taking it now or not. I am technically pre-diabetic and I have IR, but no glucose problems. We both decided it was a good preventative measure so I wouldn't actually go into diabetes. My husband has it and that is one too many! If this doctor doesn't want to honestly discuss the options, I say go to another one. If anything, this whole journey of diagnosis has taught me that I am the one responsible for my health! Be blessed and take care of YOU!!!

My Mood: Points: 3,272.39 Bank: 3,514.98 Total Points: 6,787.37 | Wow, I just wanted to say thanks for so many replies. I'm glad to see many doc's are prescribing it on their own...but it sure looks like lots of us had to ask! How lame...
Tomorrow is my appointment and I'm going to take a few research articles with me to leave with her in case she says no, and if she says no I'm going to ask if she can give me a referral to an Endo/RE or something, because I really feel like BCP's are a total band-aid fix for my ovaries and not doing anything to help my body deal with insulin resistance...
It's just so ridiculous and stressful that PCOS isn't taken seriously by many doctors.
*crosses fingers* Here's to hoping it goes well tomorrow... |

Points: 3,140.38 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,140.38 | I had asked my endo to prescribe met. He insisted that I continue with bcp's but those made me feel terrible. I've been on 1500mg/daily of met for almost 2 years now and it's worked out very well for me.
Let us know how your appointment goes Kitty

My Mood: Points: 3,272.39 Bank: 3,514.98 Total Points: 6,787.37 | Well it didn't quite go like I planned, but I'm satisfied with the result. And, to top it off, it turns out my new doc does know about treating pcos---so I'm really excited about that. And I feel a little guilty for being so cynical and just assuming she would be clueless...
I've been working really hard the last 3 months, and lost about 20lbs so far (yay!!!) So when I went in we talked about how that was going, I brought up Met and she told me she had a few other patients on it, and that it can work very well. But because I've been doing well with losing weight, she wants to wait and keep trying to lessen my symptoms that way, and if that doesn't solve my symptoms, or my insulin labs get higher, or if I really want to anyways, she said I could start it.
So, if I want to I can.
But she also explained her outlook about treating people through lifestyle changes before resorting to pills, and I think that's reasonable, and even admirable. It is a little frustrating to be told, again, 'just lose the weight!' but now that I'm seeing some progress, it's not so bad. And she did say that I could start it even if I don't lose the weight, or more importantly, if my insulin #'s go up, so it wasn't condescending. The last time a dr. told me to just lose weight, it came off very condescending but she was just really kickass!
Unfortunateley, at 24 I might officially have high blood pressure. So she gave me some medicine for that, and said that hopefully once I lose another 20 pounds or so my I won't need to take it anymore.
Hopefully! Everyone on my dad's side of the family has very high blood pressure, so it could just be my genes though, and not the weight. |
