i started metformin today and was wondering out of curiosity if any body has lost weight, stayed the same, or put on weight since they started. I would like to hear how everybodies wieght has been since starting so that i know what to expect...
I started met in september of 2002. I didn't lose weight on it, until I started to do atkins and now I'm low-carbing. While doing atkins, I lost about 35 lbs and haven't put it back on (so far!!). I've only been on 1000mg/day and I know lots of women here are on more, so a few weeks ago, I asked my gyn about possibly increasing the dosage. However, he said that my levels are all good, and my body is starting to utilize it's own insulin properly, as demonstrated by my bloodwork.
He also said something that made me extremely happy, which is that even without a low-carb diet, you should gradually lose weight, since your body is using the insulin properly. The only downfall is that I would like to lose it quicker, so I'm going to start atkins again (once the christmas cookies are all gone!).
So, I don't know your story or anything specific to you, but if you can handle it, I totally encourage doing atkins. Even if you don't do the diet, the book is an awesome read (especially the part where he mentions PCOS and the insulin problems associated with it).
Best of luck with met (hopefully you don't have the yucky side effects)!

I was at 290 when I started on metformin in June. I weigh 280 now. So, I've lost 10 pounds in 6 months on metformin. Of course, I've only recently been taking my full dose (2000 mg). I was on 500 mg for the first three months and then 1500 mg for the next three months.

Diagnosed: June 2, 2003
Metformin 2000 mg, Byetta 5mcgX2
Amy,
I dropped ten pounds without even trying within the first few weeks of metformin. Then I stayed the same for four months or so (no gaining!). Once I started low carbing, around 40 to 50 grams of low glycemic carbs per day, I started dropping two pounds a week and got pregnant (probably first ovulation in a million years). It really helps the medicine work. Ease into it, and it'll be a wonderful lifestyle change to go with met.
Best wishes,
Sheri

ok then let me ask this....
did anybody go on this med and then do a atkins or ir diet and find it easier to lose weight and feel that it was because they were on metformin?
I lost a minimal amount of weight and my hormones labs wouldn't budge with just met and I tried it with exercise for over a year. When I added the low carbing, I lost an additonal 38 pounds in the next 12 months and my labs (testosterone, cholesteral, androgen, glucose) all dropped like rocks into normal ranges.
So to answer your question, I did lose faster with the low carbing, but it was still 2.5 years that it took to lose my 53 pounds. I averaged about a pound a month the first year and then with low carbing it was about 2 pounds a month...so it wasn't swift. Met just isn't a weight loss drug, but it can help if our weight is a result of high levels of insulin. I still had to work out 3-5 times a week and low carb to get the results I wanted.
Wishing you good luck!

Amy,
Metformin does help us to lose weight more like an average person would. KYBluegrass's story is a perfect example. That poor girl was practically starving herself and still gaining. Since starting her metformin, she's been able to eat more and lose 160 pounds. (IR Diet)
I lost 50lbs slowly over the last year and a half without doing anything at all.
I do think a eat a little more then I did prior to Metformin because I have to while taking the meds.
I was down to one small meal a day prior to the met because I was continuing to gain and gain.
I started out at a even 200 - now, 150lbs.
Hi, Before Metformin I tried a couple of different diets (including low-carbing) and none seemed to work. Basically if I gained the weight I just could not ever get that weight off no matter what I was doing. My body was just so stubborn.
I did not lose weight after starting Metformin. But now I am on the South Beach Diet and I find that I am actually seeing the scale go downwards. I am actually seeing that something I am doing is making a difference in my weight - to me that is amazing.
It is not coming off quickly but it is coming off!

Yes, I did lose with the met, but not without combining it with diet and exercise too. I was no longer able to overcome my IR without medical intervention, so the met helped level the playing field for me, so I could do the work and finally see results! The met itself doesn't lose the weight...it's a pleasant side benefit of getting your insulin under control.
