Hello everyone, I'm new here. I'm wondering if there are any people around treating PCOS with natural medicines and what success they've had.
I'm also interested in hearing about people's diets, I've been on a fairly restricted diet for about 6 months and I feel like it's going pretty well. I'm concerned about a few things though, and I'm wondering also if maybe I'm being overly restricted in some ways. In the beginning I was eating almost no grains at all, at some point I got a little more lax and I've been eating brown rice, oats, barley- as a fair bit of the food that I consume. I seem to pretty much have stopped losing weight, and at the same time i feel entitled to eat b rice oats and barley in a way - like- its just freaking b rice you know!
Plus much of the information I find on glycemic index foods is contradictory. Does anyone know of a list that is acurate? I've seen wildly different information on different lists.
So, hello everyone, I'm Tigerlily, it's nice to have found a place where I feel like I can possibly get some help as well as be helpful to others.
Hi Tigerlily,
I am going to "natural" route. I take a multi, biotin, and fish oil. I also take cinnamon 1000-2000 mgs per day to try and help with blood sugar control. I have not been diagnosed as insulin resistant, but taking the cinnamon helps me avoid the blood sugar roller coaster. I don't get sleepy after lunch! :-)) I am also avoiding a lot of carbs, but not all of them. I also exercise 5 days a week. So far, I have had regular cycles with this routine! I am not opposed to western medicine, but I have terrible problems with a lot of meds. Birth control pills made me so anxious, I had difficulty functioning! So, as long as this routine works, I am going to stick with it! (I went 6 months without having a period one time!)
Welcome to the site! I have not been here long, either, but I have learned a lot. Good luck!

I've been pretty successful going the natural route. I don't eat any grain/rice or dairy products: it's all fruits, veggies, protein and nuts for me. That's the best way for me to control my blood sugar (I'm hypoglycemic).
I'm also taking herbs: 1200mg vitex, 1100mg maca, 565mg dong quai daily. My cycles are pretty regular (give or take 5 days) and I O every month.
I think, to a huge extent, that you have to figure out what works for you. I tried whole grains in limited amounts, but the moment it passed my lips, my metabolism would slow down to that of a crocodile's and I'd start heaping the weight on again.

Brener, I either sprinkle the cinnamon on food, like oatmeal in the morning. Or, I take it in pill form. I get it from Walmart at about 6 bucks for 100 capsules. I take the 1-2 capsules, 2 times per day. Honestly, I am making it up as I go!! :-)) I like it though. I don't have the "insulin-spike sleepiness" I used to get! Good luck!

It is supposed to help prevent blood sugar spikes, which should help prevent spikes in insulin production. I really feel like it is doing something for me, although how much I don't know. But, so far there are no negative side-effects and it is cheap, so I am going to stick with it. I know I have read where other cysters have had positive results with it, too. I am not opposed to taking metformin, but I am trying the "alternative" route at this time, and it seems to be working! I just keep my fingers crossed! :-))

Hello and welcome! This is a great community, hope you enjoy being here as much as I do!
I've also taken the alternative route - self-medicating with food, and various herbs, etc. I switched to a largely organic diet - eat almost no processed foods, now. I grate some cinammon onto my breakfast and/or yogurts during the day. I also use: multivitamins, Evening Primrose Oil, Co Enzyme Q10, Green Tea, and Siberian Ginseng. I try to eat some 'live food' every day too - sprouting seeds, also raw shelled hemp seed and pumpkin seeds sprinkled on things.
I'm normally a vegetarian but during this time when I changed my way of eating, I did start eating fish again for the protein and the fatty acids.
I've always had fairly extreme symptoms of PCOS - but these seem to be getting better as I've self-medicated in this way. I have a child who was vaccine damaged so I'm very sceptical about mainstream medicine and pharmaceutical solutions to problems, if an alternative, natural solution can be found. Horses for courses, though, I don't think this way or any way works for everyone!
