The GI Diet

Link where you can buy the book:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books

Link to homepage:

http://www.gidiet.com/

Description of the diet from its homepage:

Developed by Dr. David Jenkins, a professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto, the G. I. measures the speed at which foods are broken down by the body to form glucose, the body’s source of energy. High G.I. foods break down quickly and leave you looking for the next food fix. Low G. I. foods break down more slowly and leave you feeling fuller, longer. It is these low G.I. foods that form the core of the diet.

Most high GI foods such as those made from white flour are heavily processed where the essential nutrients have been stripped away. Conversely, low GI foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, whole grains, lean meat/fish and low fat dairy are rich in nutrients essential for your good health

The G.I. Diet makes all the calculations for you by listing all foods in three traffic light color categories: red light foods which you avoid if you want to lose weight; yellow light listings are foods that are to be used occasionally; and green light foods – eat as much as you like.

In short, the G.I.Diet will not let you go hungry or feel deprived. It is simplicity itself for as one journalist put it ‘if you can follow a traffic light, you can follow this diet’. Finally it will not harm your health like many of today’s diets, but rather will actually reduce your risk from heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colon and prostate cancer. With recipes, snacks ideas, pull out shopping list, pantry and dining out guides, the G.I. Diet will be the way you will eat for the rest of your life.

Sample menu:
Breakfast: Oatmeal, slice of 100% stone ground whole wheat toast
Lunch: Ham and Lentil soup, whole wheat pita half.
Supper: Chicken with long grain rice and asparagus
Snacks: Cranberry cinnamon bran muffin, Baby carrots broccoli & cucumber, Pecan Brownie and a glass of skim or 1% milk.

STOP AND GO FOODS:

Red Light: french fries, honey, bagels, cornflakes, watermelon.

Yellow Light: Corn, bananas, low fat yogurt, shredded wheat, light popcorn.

Green Light: Oatmeal, oranges, almonds, chicken, pasta.

I am new to this. Can anyone tell me which diet they suggest I use? I am trying to do this so I can get pregnant and live more healthy. Going for ovarian drilling on Nov 16th, after that to fertility specialist.

I have tried most of the plans with limited success. one cannot live on them past about 2 months.
I am doing the French diet which is not a diet. It's eating smarter.
I don't beleive in eating any faux foods( I never have) I won't touch Splenda or High Fructose corn syrup. The whole Low fat, low carb thing is so misleading.

The problem most people truly have is portion control and not eating enough fresh foods. Have slice a of cake don't eat 1/2 of it to make your self feel better. Have it for a special occasion not because it's tuesday.

Before I had kids I was a Dietician. Except in a few cases like Diabetes or some forms or epilepsy and Anorexia, most people I met were simply medicating themselves with food to feel better. Society is too fast paced anymore and demands perfection and we stuff our faces on the go or whenever our boss say we can have 5 minutes for lunch. Easier to grab a sweet and stuff it down instead of stopping the mayhem and eating a real meal.

I see this in the primary schools too. The lunch times and recess are reduced and kids stuff in what they can in their limited time.I have had to go to the school and demand that they stop rushing kids and shrtening the lunch periods. All my kids keep telling me they now get 20 minutes if lucky to eat. When I was a kid it was an hour.

If low fat or low carb is so great why is the US and Britain so much fatter than they were 20 years ago? Our medical systems are running on overload from Obesity and Diabetes related ills

We have to get off the diets! Even those of us with PCOS! We need to get off the merry go round and realize we cannot have our cake everyday and eat it too.

We can eat real foods not lab created concoctions. We can eat real cheese not that low fat, fat free junk that most sensible animals won't even eat. Just because something is sold in the market doesn't mean it's ok to eat. If I can't pronouce it I don't eat it.

I have lost 15 lbs with this philosopy. We need to listen to our bodies and eat when hungry not just because it's there or we are depressed.

getting off soapbox

Talking Common Sense

I wasn't trying to be a pain, Kat.

I am so tired of the Dieting mentality. All the "diets" out there are rehashed, repackaged things that has all been said before. I get so tired of watching sad depressed and desperate women continuing to try the lastest fad diets only to use them long enough to lose 7 lbs of water and get frustrated that she isn't a size 6 yet.

It took us longer than 7 days to get heavy and have it affect our health. I had developed PCOS about 5 years ago after I had my tubes tied. ( I don't care what the experts say, tying your tubes screws you up)

I live with many of the same problems as most PCOS patients including extra weight. I had my head stuffed in the books. A trend I finally noticed was that when I visited France as teen everyone was skinny despite all that real, rich food. Ever been to a French market in France? There are no nutrition labels breaking down all the micro nutrients. they also have small kitchens and less storage than in the Us or even the UK and are forced to buy fresh food more frequently than going to Sam's Club. The French think the US and the UK are ridiculous for how much we actually fret over foods. We may not be able to enjoy the lengthy mealtimes the French do due our pace of live, but we should learn a few important things.

1. American Supermarkets are a chemistry set with some food thrown in to fool us. We need to trick the food companies and buy from the perimeter of the store.

2. We are so stressed out as a nation it is easier to eat than think or go for a walk. Put down the 100 calorie pack of Oreos and walk. It will release the same hormones that the food does.

3. We think we can't lose weight unless some " expert" tell us what to eat. Not true. the four food groups were basic and made sense. The food pyrimid is a scam designed by self interest groups along with the ADA and AMA. Ignore it. If it worked we'd all be size fours and have the doctors begging for patients.

4. Our bodies have no had time to adapt to all the chemicals in our foodstuff. We buy food products, not food. Cheetos and Oreos don't grow on trees. Save that stuff for special occasions. same with all the soda drinking.

5. When Coke become a breakfast drink? Drink Water or veggie juices. Fruit juices contain too much sugar and should be eaten whole.

6. Does anyone really understand how High Fructose Corn syrup and hydrogenated fats like Margarine are made? If they did they wouldn't eat them!

7. You can eat real cheese, real cream, real milk, real bread, fruits and butter and potatoes and red meats and still lose weight!

8. stop the Insanity! We don't have to constantly be on the move to please others( a hard one for women, I have 4 kids, I know). Kids don't need to be in 3 extracuricular activities each. You are allowed some relaxation time. Take it. Moms are the glue that binds a family.

9. slow down your meals and make better choices.

10. Women lose differntly as they age. You will not lose weight as fast as you did at 18 and expect it to stay off. steady goes it.

We only live once and we get one body.We need to give it the real fuel and movement and time off it deserves.

Alexandra, I agree w/ everything you are saying. I am one of those ppl who uses food to comfort myself. I know it's wrong and I know the only person I'm hurting is myself and it's something I am constantly working on. We do live in a society that moves very fast and also requires perfection making eating difficult if you have yourself stuck in a rut like I do. But, I'm working on it and that's what counts.

At the same time I worte that I was in the proces of makign a Key Lime Pie for a family function! It is tough, but we really need to leanr NOT to use food to feel better. I was in boat. I have been very depressed as of late and need to make sure not to turn to the fridge for a pick me up. I work my scrapbook or sewing. need to use my hands.

No pain inflicted...as I said, I enjoyed your post.

I've never been to France, but I just got back from Thailand. Everyone is small, and food is plentiful. But most of the meals are centered on fruits and veggies.

Well I put all this information together to help cysters who were looking for information on particular diets.

I don't believe one diet is necessarily better than another and the only way I personally lose weight is to *diet* - if simply eating healthily worked for me I would never have gained weight.

But - rather than criticise other diets I would certainly welcome a post with information/links etc. to the "French don't get fat" eating plan you have found helpful. It may just help others.

I would have to agree w/ you on that one Maddy. Eating right and exercising doesn't seem to always work in the case of someone w/ PCOS. In fact the only time I was able to lose some serious weight (only to gain it back) was when I was working out for 3 - 4 hours a day and barely eating. And, at that I was always starving and tired all the time. So that obviously didn't work! Anyway.... I'm still in the search for a good diet plan/lifestyle change for my eating habits and workouts. I don't know which one will do the trick but I appreciate all the info you have compiled here. I plan to read through it and see if I can't try a particular diet or modify a few to get one that will work for me!
