Hi all,
I have been doing some research into hypothyroid problems associated with PCOS, because I suspect I have a problem. I took my basal body temp yesterday morning when I first woke up, and it was 96.4. Several other times when I took my temp in the past few months it was low as well. I am also anemic right now due to excessive bleeding from a fibroid, and I know anemia can cause low BBT's, but I have been taking prescription iron supplements for four months now and haven't had any blood work since March, so I don't know how much the anemia is contributing to my low body temp. I am trying to figure out how much my dieting (IR + Weight Watchers) is contributing to my low body temp. I have read here in a research article about how years of on/off again dieting + binge eating can lead to hypothyroid problems, and that all makes sense to me. I am sure that many more PCOS women have low thyroid than are aware of it. I am wondering if it is possible to have low BBT's just because of low calorie consumption (not starvation, but enough to lose weight on) without actually being hypothyroid? Anyway, I just ran across something I thought was interesting that I wanted to share with you:
"A low-calorie diet can suppress the thyroid function within seven to 24 hours. After one to three months of such dieting, there is a danger of permanently inhibiting the thyroid function."
Sounds like we are all doomed, lol. Anyway, here is the link for the full article, which is a general one about thyroid problems:
