Default difference between Glucophage and Glucophage XR??

My doctor first put me on Metformin and when I went back, he wrote me a perscription for Glucophage XR. I went to the pharmacist and give him the perscription. When I returned, he gave me metformin. I told him that I wanted what was on the perscription and he told me that he would have to order it and to come back the next day. Well, I went today and realized he gave me the regular Glucophage. I know Met and Gluc have the same ingredients, but I heard XR is time release and is taken once a day plus it stays in your body longer. Is that the only difference of the two?

Yes that is the only difference--but it is a very important difference

Met and Gluc are the same, met is just the generic form. But with the regular and XR, my dr said the XR was alot easier on your stomache (Met has some bad s/e for some) but that you shouldn't switch between the two. Maybe you should call your dr back and make sure he want's you to switch. I was having some severe s/e on the regular and my Dr. said the XR would have been better but I couldn't switch because I already had the regular in my system. Just check to be sure-My Dr. could have definalty been wrong. It wouldn't be the first time!! Good luck to you!!!!

I've heard that XR can be a lot easier to adjust to.
