Default Differences between Glucophage and Metformin?

What are the differences I know metformin is the generic form of glucophage, but I have read on here before that some women cant stand one but the other is fine. The reason why I ask is because I have been taking glucophage XR for six months now, and well I went to a new doctor and he prescribed Metformin XR... and I dont want to switch if there is a chance that it might screw me all up and have some side effects... So please ladies explain this to me!

Roberta,
I asked my doctor about this, and she said in the most serious tone that they are identical. Same ingredient. Period. Obviously some time-release versions are available rather than the regular, but the medicine is the same and any difference would be like a placebo effect.
This is the opinion of one doctor, and I recently heard that questions about meds are best asked of a pharmacist. They deal with them all day, so I guess they'd be the pros.
Let us know if you find out anything,
Sheri

Glucophage xr comes in generic now????? Did this just come out??? I am still paying my normal $12 copay but if there is a generic now I will have to pay ancillary fee or switch.

I take gluc - not the XR kind. At first I was taking the brand name gluc - then the generic metformin came out, so I thought I'd try it since my endo said they're the same thing.

I think the fillers are what's different, but the actual medicine is supposed to be the same. Anyway, within 3 days my face started breaking out again, so I switched back to gluc.

Then in January my insurance changed and they gave me a hard time about taking the brand name. I thought I'd try the generic again. This time I lasted 3 months - my hair started getting oily again, my dandruff came back, my acne
started to come back, and my nails started to get weak and break easily again.

I called my endo and requested that she call the pharmacy and say I HAD to have the brand name. She did, but once again told me they were the same. I'm back to taking the brand name gluc - paying the higher co-pay - but I don't care. My nails are growing again, and my dandruff is starting to disappear and my face is clear again.

I'm a firm believer in brand name gluc over generic met. That's just me - it may work fine for others!

There is no Met XR, but not all doctors know that. My first doc wrote me a script for Met XR and the pharmacy gave me Gluc. XR and said generic is not available. Regular Met comes only in the non XR variety.
