Question Differences between Regular MET & MET XR/Pros & Cons

Hi Cysters!!

I have been taking regular MET for the past 3 weeks. I am now up to 1500 mgs. But, my last prescription was for MET XR. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the two (other than MET XR is extended release). Are there pros and cons to taking one than the other? If so, what are they? I am just wondering if I should ask my doctor to give me the regular MET next time. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
((hugs))

Tara,
Thanks for posting this. My new endo. just prescribed the Met ER and I am about to take my first dose. I had a hard time remembering to take my last dose of Met so I am hoping taking it all at one (this is what ER is for) will help me to keep my dosage level.
It will be interesting to see what other have to say.

Well, I took the regular Met years ago and had horrible gastro problems. Now, I'm on the XR and just got up to 1500 yesterday and haven't seemed to have much problem. I do need to be diligent about eating frequently and not eating sugary foods but I think that's the case with both types.

When I upped to 1500 mg a few weeks ago I had bad GI side effects that I had not had on 1000 mg. And that was with forgetting to take one of the 3 daily pills on a regular basis. I asked my doc for the XR and since I have been on it the GI side effects are much better and I have remembered to take the full dose everyday (I take 2 x 750 mg pills with a glass of milk before bedtime). I like the XR a lot better, and I like that I don't have to think about taking met all day long!
