Default Different Generics? Is there a difference?

I've been on Met for a month and just had to have my RX refilled. The first RX I got from Winn Dixie. The pills were an off color, caplets, and smelled strongly like cotton candy (I know wierd, but they really did!). This time I had it filled at CVS and the pills are HUGE tablets, white and they smell really bad! I asked the pharmacist what the difference was and he said just different manufacturers. Each pill is 850mg, BTW. What do your pills look like? Do you think there is a difference in the effectiveness of these pills? I ask because so far my SE are far less than they were with the first RX I had! Thanks!

Yep, the cotton candy pills were much better to take My DH thought I was insane when I said they smelled like cotton candy, but my mom and he both agreed that was what they smelled like!

Thumbs up Yep, it's those binders and fillers...

I say we start a petition to ban that awful fish-smelling filler! I have never been given anything but those awful stinky pills and I'm ready for some cotton candy flavour.

I thought those first pills were bad enough to take due to their size, but I'd much rather take them than these tinky ones that are even larger! My new pill has 'BP 127' stamped on its side. Any ideas of how to look up the manufacturer of this particular pill? I've still got the bottle from my first RX maybe I can figure out what manufacturer it was also. If all else fails, I'll call the pharmacy and ask, but I hate to be a pest! I happen to know the manager of CVS well, and I may request the other manufacturer if possible because I'd rather get my rx there!

My pharmacist says there are so many companies that manufacture and sell the generic brand of Glucophage and allof their binders and fillers differ: ICN, Nu Pharm, Apo tex, Rhoxal, Novo, Pharmoscience, Avantis Pharma, Technolab etc etc. I wonder if I started calling these companies if they would admit it if their pills had a foul odour?

Now if they would market chocolate flavored met, I'd be a happy woman!

You can go to a medical library and look up medications in the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) if I remember correctly, they picture the different pills for each medication.

Here is a web site that shows the PDR and what info it has in it.

Thanks ladies! I wanted to update to say, duh...why didn't I just look on my bottle! The 'cotton candy' pills were made by Watson and the stinky ones by Mylan. I found the site where the FDA approved these companies to manufature Metformin.

This is from that site:

14 75-976 METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE TABLETS 500 MG, 850 MG, AND 1 G MYLAN PHARMACEUTICALS, INC. 1/24/02

15 75-979 METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE TABLETS 500 MG, 850 MG, AND 1 G WATSON LABORATORIES, INC. 1/24/02

And the site if anyone is interested:
