So in Canada there are 3 different ways to adopt. Through foster care, through childrens services (without fostering) and privately. For those of you that have adopted which did you choose and why? Where you happy with your choice?
I like the idea of going private through an agency but it cost mega $$$ and adopting through CAS is free (but takes a long time).

Here in the states, I know that ppl have great success with foster to adopt from the state. But I have heard personally, from friends that I have made in the adoption world and one close friend that foster to adopt is not for everyone. 2 of them had kids placed with them (one for over 2 years) and they were pulled. The later of them the kids were calling them mom and dad and they were pulled.
When dh and I are started to do research on it we went to the informational meeting on it and when we left there dh said that he wouldn't be able to do it. He said we would figure out to get the money for adoption.
Now that we have our 1st adoption under our belt (Thank you LORD!) it will be sometime that we think about #2. When we start that process over again we aren't going to go to do how we did our 1st. It just tapped us out financially and emotionally (as does ttc...) we know that we can't do that again without serious help from God. So I have started praying. I know that prayer works wonders. I am praying for us to either ttc and be successful or start adoption and everything workds out financially that we don't have to tap 401k again or another loan.
I know that babies are priceless, but you have to have common sense. You need to start planning now and saving and start doing fundraisers (garages sales....that's one of the things that we did, 1 weekend: $1000)
So good luck! If you ever need anyone to talk to or need advice ask here or you can PM me.
Calches: Thanks for the reply. I think we'd like to do private adoption but it costs around $10,000. We really need to sit down and think long and hard about all our options. We are also still TTC and investigating our recurrent losses so I feel like I'm torn in so many directions.

$10000 candadian dollars? I am sorry I have no clue on the convergence in to US dollars...
If ours was actually 10k I would of been delighted...our entire adoption with everything said and done is at $30k. That is what I meant about saving and planning.
I will keep ya'll in my prayers. That either way you decide to build your family that it is not that long.
That's what I've read but maybe I'm naive maybe the true cost is more like $30,000. Either way it seems unfair that anyone has to spend that kind of money to have a family when other people pop out kids without thinking twice about it.

Yeah there is no choice I guess. I just think it's sad that there are lots of kids that need homes but most people can't afford the adoption process or are scared away by all the hoops to jump through. The more I read the more I'm leaning towards a private adoption through an agency. I think we will wait a few more months before we start anything because I'm going to have a whole bunch of testing done within the next few months.

You are correct the cost to adopt private domestic in Canada is between $10-12k...from what I understand. To adopt internationally will run you $30-50k.

Just wanted to let you know that you can also write off some of the cost of adopting in Ontario I want to say up to $20000 but not a 100% sure, I know even with IVF you can claim it on your income tax as well HTH
I think the best thing to do whenever anybody starts thinking about wanting to adopt is to go to a few informational meetings at agencies and social services. That way you can ask questions and get a feel for the agency.
With our adoption the expenses didn't come all at once which made things much more practical. Good luck!!!

Great thread - thanks for posting Kristy It's nice to have numbers in CAD figures. Adoption is confusing to say the least! I can see why couples are reluctant to dive in.

Hi All, Im a new Cyster but I wanted to share here. I got diagnosed with PCOS right after I had to have an endometrial oblation. I already had kids, but I had wanted more. That ache to be a mother hadnt gone away yet.I started fostering & had no intention of adopting, until MCFD brought me a beautiful little girl right out of the hospital, born addicted to crack. I fell in love ! I am so happy to report that her bio mother agreed to sign the papers, she is going to be my daughter !!!! Keep hope! I wish you all the best!
