. . . she said she would write a letter that would say I need to go to the gym b/c of obesity. I was shocked, I told her I gained wait b/c of the pcos and she said that obesity contributes to pcos.

SO in her words if your fat you have pcos, then I told her that many thin cysters have pcos too! And she was like thats a different type of pcos. I was shocked. I had once cared for this doctor and all this made me see her in a different light!

Ladies I really need your help and opinion.
Just remember, you asked for opinions, so I’m offering mine, though I fear it might be in the minority. I’m really surprised you fired her. I mean your account of what happened was a bit sketchy as you didn’t mention if she was mean in what she said or just matter of fact.

I did fire a doctor once when after being diagnosed with insulin resistance he refused to prescribe metformin. We argued back and forth about why I should be taking it until he finally said “Listen, you’re going to be full blown diabetic eventually and have to take medication for it anyway, so you might as well enjoy this time of not having to take any.”

That shocked me, especially because before saying that, he swore at me as well (and in front of his nurse practicioner, no less). Boy did her eyebrows go up.

Anyway . . .

I tend to be overly sensitive at times, but even I don’t really see where she said anything that terribly wrong. Are you obese? If yes, why argue with her over the reason for your going to the gym? As you mentioned, having PCOS does not mean a person will become obese, so even I don’t think that PCOS is a correct justification for writing a script for the gym.

And in your words, she didn't say you were fat because of PCOS. She said (quoting) "obesity contributes to PCOS" and that is true.

I don’t know if I would say that heavy and thin cysters have a different type of PCOS, but I have heard doctors (and thin cysters themselves) say that being thin with PCOS is often approached differently because they can’t just "lose weight" as a form of treatment. It’s actually harder to treat in many cases.

On the other hand, the majority of obese PCOS women report a significant decrease in symptomology - if not a complete disappearance of their symptoms (Kat being one of them) - when they eliminated foods that aggravated PCOS, exercised, and got down to a normal weight.

And some women with the proactive approach to their weight, never got overweight at all. I have two friends who have fought against weight gain and through much work have managed to keep their weight at - not skinny - but healthy levels.

At the time, neither even knew they had PCOS, but when they saw they were tacking on 5, 10 or 20 pounds, they buckled down and lost it. I think you can say that PCOS makes it easier to gain weight, but you can’t blame it.

Though I wouldn’t say that being overweight “causes” PCOS per se, but for me personally, and others that I know, weight was a MAJOR factor in the on-surge of my symptoms.

My endocrinologist told me that in most of her PCOS cases of heavy women, they reported something like a "magic number" that triggered their PCOS symptoms. Up to that weight, all was fine and as soon as they passed it, BAM! So, allowing oneself to get very overweight does contribute to PCOS.

In short, I guess all I’m saying is I think you’re being a little harsh on your doctor. I doubt she said any of those things to be mean. I think she thought she was being honest.

I would much prefer my doctor be open and honest with me than walk on eggshells so as to save my feeling. Yes, being referred to as obese stings a little, but like they say . . . the truth hurts.

Heather a appreciate your opinion. I am not technically obese, for my weight and height I am considered overweight. Another thing that made me drop this doctor was that she wasn't as proactive as I hoped. She told me I had to take a break (this after three cycles) and wait to talk to the fertility specialist (which I can not afford). For me this felt like the right thing to do. If you don't agree then that's your opinion.

I agree completely. Also, I do agree with the doctor not being comfortable prescribing Femara, given that there are some studies indicating that it causes birth defects, and it is NOT labeled for fertility use (it is a breast cancer drug). Whether these studies are accurate or not, it is definitely a doctors right to not prescribe a drug if they aren't comfortable with it.

If this was an OB/GYN, then she probably felt that future treatment would be out of the scope of her specialty (fertility wise). Many OB/GYN's will do Clomid but will refer you on for further treatment, as most of them don't really specialize in helping people get PG.

If you had three cycles with no response to Clomid, it seems logical to me that she would recommend waiting and seeing a specialist.

I mean no offense, just trying to look at things from the other side of the story. Good luck with your new doctor. Hopefully they will be more in line with what you expect and will be on the same page as you treatment wise. Is this an OB/GYN as well?

It just seemed obvious to me in your original post, that your biggest upset stemmed from the "obese" comment that she made. As you said it was that comment that made you "see her in a different light". The fact that you're still defending your weight shows that it was a sore spot.

And for whatver reason, it was that same comment that ruffled the feathers of most of the other responders to this thread, not the other stuff.

And as far as whether your are or aren't overweight or obese . . . weight charts really can't be relied on. My husband is rock hard muscle with little fat to speak of, yet his height and weight peg him as obese.

If my doctor says I'm obese rather than "overweight" as the weight chart says I am, I really don't think I'm going to quibble. If I appear obese to them, well that stings, but I'm not going to fire them over it.

Yeah, I know you fired her for other reasons too, but I'd wager that things would have turned out differently if it hadn't been for that comment.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or hurtful, but when it comes to PCOS, even the most sweet and compassionate doctors are going to have to say things about our weight that we don't like or want to hear, though it needs to be said to address the problem.

Hezzer-What made me switch doctors was that she wasn't as proactive as I liked. She wanted me to take a break and I didn't find the need to do so. I emailed her yesterday and told her I chose to find another doctor because she wasn't as informed on pcos as I had hoped and her layed back approach wasn't what I was looking for.

Now I wish I could sit here and defend myself and over analyze what was said or done, but I don't feel like its neccesary.
