Angry disappointed and misunderstood by nurses/doctors

What's with doctors and nurses nowadays? Don't they understand what we are going through? The first time I told my nurse about my irregular cycles, she told me I was too young to worry about it, and that no one had 100% regular cycles. I insisted she let reffered me to a specialist or for tests, but for months she refused, until I had to change doctors. I then started to see a female doctor who i thought was very understanding at first, but later, she began to show a lack of knowledge on PCOS, she didn't have a clue about possible treatments etc. When i first go diagnosed, she told me not to worry about it, that there was no treatment for it (I'm aware there are no CURES, but surely there are some good ways of treating the effects of PCOS). I then started to do my own research and cme up with so much stuff that she had no clue about (meformin etc.) i am now begging her to prescribe Met to me but she seems very uncertain, as if she didn't believe it could help. She is very nonchalant about this whole thing and I'm begininng to get very affected by it. She is like 2Well, I don't know if you should go on it, here are a lot of side effects bla bla bla..." well side effects are the last thing I'm worried about right now. She also thinks that wouldn't need met as i'm not overweight. But I have learnt from this forum and from other literature that a cyster doesn't need to be obese to be on Met. I'm willing to go through ANY test I need in order to get Metformin. My partner and I were trying for a baby and nothing happened, which is why i told her about the possibility that Met could really help. if doctors are not competent, who are we supposed to go to for help and advice??????? Now I'm in the process of changing doctors AGAIN, but everytime I do that, there is no guarantee I will finally get my treatment. I feel very frustrated, as if i knew more about PCOS than my doctor!! Anyone in my situation???

I can understand your frustration...one thing I would suggest is that when you ask for treatment, or ways to reduce health risks associated with pcos, and the practioner is non-responsive, direct them to do the following:

"Please make a note in my files that, "Patient is concerned about future health risks associates with PCOS, however, I am refusing treatment.'"

The doctor/nurse will probably not be thrilled that you are asking this, but try to remain VERY calm and non-confrontational.

Just simply explain that the research is clear that PCOS has associated health risks, and there are many treatment available. You understand that treatment is being refused, but you want to have ON RECORD that treatment was, in fact refused, so that if you suffer in ill-effects in the future, it has been documented.

If they refuse to document the refusal, calmly tell them that you plan on calling your insurance company to explain that the full details of your visit are not being documented.

Do your best not to get upset. Explain to your doctor that you aren't trying to be difficult, or adversarial. You just want your records to accurately reflect what transpired in the office.

You'll either get treatment...or a referral to a new doctor.

It works everytime.

girl, i know what your going through, my dr is the same way..i was diagnosed feb 5 2007, i've had a heavy period flow since october..with no breaks in between, i've been on 2 different bcp and they haven't stopped the bleeding, so my dr suggested a d&c, which i had this past tuesday..my mom asked him why he thought i was bleeding so much and why bc wasn't helping and he told her "if there was a cure for this, then i could retire"..you must know my momma..she was pissed..some just don't care, i'm hoping you'll find the right dr that will worry about your needs..if you need anything, i'm here!!

Change doctors! Or you need to find an reproductive endocronologist to treat your problem instead. I made the mistake of not finding a doctor to treat me, and I am only being treated now because of the infertility, not because of the PCOS that causes all the problems. I just wish I had found a doctor to treat me a long time ago and I probably could have a lot of my problems treated.
