Disappointed by the new BMI requirement for China adoption
Last year we put our China adoption on hold because I found out I was pregnant, and I hadn't kept up with all the changing information since then. I was so disappointed today to find out that they have a new BMI requirement of less than 40. Being plus size I definitely do not meet this requirement! I feel so let down, wishing that I hadn't put my adoption on hold and had just kept going with it.
Not to be dishonest, but is there anyone who has found a way to get around this at all? It just seems like a ridiculous requirement. What if you gain weight during the time you submit your dossier and when you get your referral? Do they just say "sorry, you're out of luck." Ugh, I'm so discouraged.
Thanks for listening, I guess I just needed to vent.

Are you trying to adopt now? I see your son is not even a year old yet and if your not ready to continue at this present time with a adoption maybe you can work on losing a little weight. I know it will be hard (trust me I'm trying to lose weight myself LOL). If you really want to look into adoption right now are you set on China? Maybe looking into another country or even domestically might be a better choice. When I started the adoption process I was thinking of adopting Internationally but decided Domestic would be better for me and now I have a precious baby boy.
I hear ya Jessica. I *just* fall at 41 for my BMI and we want to adopt from China again. My DH has lost 35 pounds and is now at a 40 BMI so he is good to go. Sssooo easy for GUYS eh ?
Its not "fair" but its their rules. There is no way to get around it as they want to slow down the amount of dossiers submitted. I am not sure about weight gain during waiting though. I wonder about that ? especially if you are right on 40 when you submit...chances of stress gain are pretty good !

Babygirl- I don't think we are looking to start adoption right now, so I can try to work on losing some weight between now and when we decide to start. We have also looked into domestic adoption, and we may end up going that way. I was set on China because that's what we had chosen before, but things change!
dna- Yes, I was thinking how easy it is for me to gain weight when I am stressed out. Our case worker at the adoption agency is going to see what she can find out for me regarding that, just because I'm curious and because it could be a big factor in whether we choose to go with China or a domestic adoption in the future.
Thanks guys!

I really wonder about that b/c right now, your age & everything else in your dossier is "locked in" once your DTC. So I wonder w/ the new restrictions how that will work out...
I know you have to let CCAA know if your income drastically changes for the worse but I wonder about weight.
We're also out b/c of weight. I'm surprisingly below the BMI cutoff (38) but DH is over & needs to lose about 20 lbs.

If you think you might be interested in a waiting child, I know that there are some agencies who are willing to ask the CCAA for a "BMI Waiver" (or other waiver), and argue your case for you. I know this only because DH and I were interested in a little boy a while back and the agency all but begged us to let them fight for us so he could have a home. Fortunately, though our family situation wasn't right at the time, he did find a family.. a single mom with 5 other kids! That's two waivers right there, so they're definitely still giving them out. Again though, I think they only do it for the WC program.
