Default Discolored Teeth?

What kind of OTC teeth whitening products do you or have you used? Or do you prefer to get it done professionally?

I decided to go the other route and buy enamel building toothpaste. The whiteing toothpaste was stripping my teeth and making them worse and more sensitive. The Pronamel stuff is working pretty well. My teeth are not bright white, but there is a difference. You are also supposed to avoid drinking or eating anything for a bit after you brush to give your teeth time to build up enamel. Acidic foods can break down the enamel, so tea, pop and such can cause teeth to turn darker because of a loss of enamel. That's just from my research, but it seems to work with me.

Whitening works by bleaching or stripping the enamel from your teeth. Whitening products are bad for enamel, as is the acid in foods and drinks. I use a soft toothbrush and don't brush overly hard, but that whitening toothpaste was pretty hard on my teeth. It even says on the tube not to use for long periods since it can weaken teeth. We don't even buy them now.

I was sick of my yellow teeth so I used crest whitestrips and I still have perfectly bright white teeth 6 months later. Hassle to use but worth it imo.

You mean hassle because they were messy? Have you seen Aquafresh whitening trays...those are really easy to use, you just pop them on for about 45 min. They are soft trays too...so they go perfectly over teeth. I felt like the strips didn't cover EVERYTHING I hoped.

Whitening does not strip your enamel. Whitening is moderation is not bad, either. And you're right about whitening toothpaste... or ANY toothpaste other than the plain ol' simple kind (think regular crest)! That stuff is horrible for your gums and can cause recession which = sensitivity!

I was thinking of bleaching and whitening as one thing. Bleaching can erode enamel:

Whitening is usually just peroxide.

I work in the dental field. Bleaching and whitening are one in the same.
