Wink discovery health channel

i was flipping channels and i like to watch birth day. i had never heard pcos mentioned until this morning. both of the women who gave birth had pcos. alot of the information sounded good with one exception in my opinion.

if i heard correctly, when they described pcos, they said it was a RARE condition. i think they said it affected less than 10 percent of women of childbearing years. i thought it was higher than that, but i should check my information.

also, they said these women had fought infertility for many years.....the first woman got pregnant after either her first or second round of fertility drugs and then was put on bcp after giving birth to twins. missed one dose and got pregnant again. she was 26 or 27. i am not sure how long the second woman was trying for the first child, but it took 6 years for her to concieve again.

i am not saying that their problems getting pregnant were not trying and difficult, but it seems to me like there are many women here who have tried much longer to less success.

that said, i am still glad to see a whole episode 'dedicated' to pcos.

check your local listings.....

have a great day/weekend.

Lisa

i did check the info and of course i was wrong and the tv show was right at the 10 percent.....i just was a little taken back with the statement of pcos being a RARE syndrome.....have a great day...

Thanks for letting us know. I'd love to see that episode, if I can find out when it airs again.

I'm surprised that they would consider a condition that ~10% of women have to be rare. I did some research for comparison- diabetes affects about 6.3%, or a little more than 18 million people in the US (don't know about worldwide). I've never heard diabetes referred to as rare.

I think what is "rare" is someone in the mainstream media who really understands it.

Lisa, I too saw that episode yesterday and I was also taken back by the amount of ease that the girl who had the twins had at getting pregnant. I was glad to finally see though that PCOS was finally in a program that may help educate the public on this condition. I just wish that more people knew what went on with this syndrome. Meagan
