do you retain a lot of water? My mom was put on diuretics as well but her problem is water retention. I would not take them if all you want to do is lose weight b/c that seems to me like heading down a slippery slope. I would get a second opinion if you don't trust your dr as to why he gave them. I know too many girls (I was one of them) that took diuretics to lose weight & had the opposite problem...I became anorexic & had a horrible time eating food (I still do have a horrible time which you would never believe if you saw me b/c I'm about 75 #'s overweight...).
