Okay...I am just trying to seek some advice. When I was diagnosed with PCOS, I was told that my insulin was 10.5. The doctor did not mention IR and pretty much gave me Met and said "Good Luck". I have since switched to another doctor and wanted to know if the IR was something to pursue or is my level nothing. Some sites tell me that it is and others say that it is not. Just curious....

My insulin was recently tested and I was told normal is between 6 and 25 (so finding out I was down to 10.5 from 43.7 was exciting). I haven't researched it yet so I don't know for sure...just what I was told. But I like to research everything the drs tell me before I buy into it 100%.

A lot of factors come into reading the test result, especially for that kind of test. Your age, gender, etc etc. Also different labs can use different reference ranges. If you can get a copy of the paperwork there should be a recommended range or whatever they call it that will tell you where you stand, but in the end a test like that is best left to the Dr to decide if it should be worried about. I hope you find your answers. In the mean time track any symptoms you might be having or have had (increased thirst, dark marks on skin, fatigue, etc.) and if you notice a pattern or anything interfering with life be sure to tell your doctor because that can aid in a diagnosis, and that's all I know. My reference source is that my mom is a lab technician. HTH. =)
Addition: I also agree with joobilee that you should always research everything the drs say. Also, I always make sure to get a copy of the lab papers so *I* can look at the numbers for myself, you never know if they messed up or misread.

Could be...but usually...the way I understand it, the IR usually is the cause of PCOS symptoms. The high insulin causes the higher amounts of androgens which cause the symptoms. I don't know for sure...that's just the way I understand it. It's all pretty confusing to me no matter how much I read as to what causes what. If anyone ever gets to the bottom of it and can explain in plain terms I hope they share with me. Lol.

I had the exact same thing happen, my blood glucose was always normal but in Jan I found out my insulin was basically twice the high normal.
When you have IR your body uses insulin just not very well BUT your pancreas produces insulin when there is glucose in your blood. So since your body doesn't use use it very well your pancreas just keeps pumpin it out until your glucose normalizes and it takes a ton more than someone who is not IR.
The hair problem comes from too much androgen (which is caused by the IR) I have heard that spearmint tea helps lower androgen levels which would help but really the best thing to do is get your IR taken care of. I found that d-chiro-inositol worked awesome for me. You might want to try that.
