Hiya, it's my first time here, so forgive me if my question has been answered before. Having a hard time navigating so far!
Sometime last year i had an ultrasound because radiographers found 'free fluid' on my pelvis during an MRI scan on my hips and i was sent to a gynaecologist. He then sent me to the sonographer. I was diagnosed with having a 'cluster of cysts' on my left ovary (i think!). The sonographer said it was fairly large (6cm) but i've since read that this doesn't seem to be large at all. Maybe she was taking into account my age (at the time, 19)? Anyway, that's all she said- a cluster of cysts. Apart from extremely irregular periods, i don't seem to have any other symptoms of anything. I didn't know much about PCOS when i was diagnosed with my cysts and so never asked the gynaecologist. He put me on Yasmin which i was led to believe would shrink the cysts. But having read up on the internet, it doesn't seem as if it will shrink them, merely get rid of the irregular periods.
So i think my first question to you all is this: Do you think i have PCOS? I'm not in the slightest bit overweight (i'm underweight), i don't have any hair issues and i rarely have pain; if i do it's normally no worse that average mittelschmerz and normally in the wrong side (assuming i remembered which side i was told!). My periods are the only symptom of PCOS i have so i'm wondering if you can only have one symptom and still have it? Or if not, does anyone have any idea of what i do have?
Also, i'm concerned i won't be able to have children without medication and the worry of miscarriage. Assuming i don't have PCOS, does anyone know if my 'cluster of cysts' will affect my chances of getting (and staying) pregnant?
I think the best thing would be to go to an endocrinologist and have them run tests to find out. Also, I believe that any cysts on any ovary is a sign of something wrong and should be dealt with (especially if you want children). There are women on this board who are also not overweight who have PCOS. Also, PCOS is hard to diagnose because all the symptoms might not be there, but irregular periods is a major sign of PCOS.
Go have it checked out! Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply! Excuse my ignorance here, but i'm not entirely sure what an endocrinologist does. I have a vague idea it's something to do with checking hormones? Last time i saw the gynaecologist i was sent for a blood test. And i think he said it would be to check hormones. So is that what you've just suggested? I've had neither my sonogram appointment, gynaecology appointment or blood test results yet... If the problem was directly related to work i could probably get all this done much faster (i work in an NHS hospital)... Just a case of waiting! I run to the front door each morning to see if i've got any appointments. I'm dying to get diagnosed with something, i really want to be treated.
Yes, an endocrinologist studies the glands and hormones of the body and their related disorders. For example, if you have PCOS, you probably have high levels of testosterone, possibly high cholesterol and a ton of other hormonal imbalances. IF you go to the newbie section, there is an article on tests you should request from your endo. I suggest you print them out, it also shows regular levels to look for.

Hi!
I went to a new Ob this past Tues. and she went over my history w/me and the decided to do an u/s. She found about 7 or 8 cysts on both ovaries as well as a possible polyp in my uterus. I have had irregular periods since 13. I was on the pill f/20-25 and when I went off everything went wrong. My Ob said that she does not think that I ovulate, and if I do, very rarely. She told me that If I want to conceive that I will need fertility drugs. From what I've read, there are varying degrees of PCOS. Some women have no cysts but have other hormonal problems.
