Does anyone know why you have to throw away byetta after 30 days? I've been on it for a little over a week now and I just now can try to go to twice daily injections. I know I will have some left over. Since my insurance doesn't cover it I think I will have a hard time throwing it away. I wonder if it is a germ issue once the seal is broken? The byetta should still be effective until 2008. (according to the experation date). Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
YES! I went to a meeting with the Byetta rep a few months ago. It is only good for 30 days after the first use. It looses stregnth after 30 days. It is best if you throw away.

I wonder why it would loose strength 30 days after the first use?? As long as it it unused it lasts until the experation date. Maybe air gets to it or something?? Shucks.
Hmmm, it seems like if it loses effectiveness after 30 days, what about days 28, 29, etc. Does this mean you aren't getting an effective dose? Surely 30 isn't a magic number that suddenly changes.

Stacie- That's why I was wondering if it was a germ thing. I can't find any info online about why you have to throw it away. It just says you have to but doesn't say why. And of course my doctor said to throw it away but she didn't know why. I guess she was just following the instructions given??
My doctor actually told me that if there was some left after the 30 days I should go ahead and use it until it was gone. However, I discovered the other day that the pen only allows you to do 60 doses, so even though there was some left I couldn't get it out and had to toss the pen.

I can explain. The pen is calibrated to deliver exactly 60 doses, and if you are using it past that (30 days), then you aren't getting a full dose, as the very end of the pen isn't calibrated accurately. If you're only taking it once a day, toss it after 60 days. I do have to wonder why you're only doing it once a day though!

Kayiena- I only take it once a day due to the extreme nausea. It makes me throw up if I take it twice daily. I've only been on it for two weeks. I've tried several times to take it twice daily but yuck!!!!! Thanks for the info. So you think it's still effective???
