I plucked chin hair for years - I finally got fed up and saw an electrolosist. She actually has PCOS as well! She told me that plucking hairs that grow due to a hormonal imbalance actually causes multiple hairs to grow out of the same hairshaft. So when plucking you are actually making the problem worse! After staying on bcp to address my hormonal imbalance and getting electrolysis the hair growth has stopped. Please, don't pluck!
A lady who did my electrolysis told me the same thing. She said never pluck anything but eyebrows. She said if I did it anymore she wouldn't work with me because it would be a waste of time.
Oh noooo! I've been doing this for a long time now. I have noticed more hairs growing in the same spots, too. :/
Is waxing ok, or pretty much the same thing as plucking because you're yanking it out? I can't afford electrolysis in the foreseeable future and I sure don't want to walk around with chin hairs for the next few years. haha

Waxing is indeed the same as plucking.
Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating all pull the hair out by the roots and where the growth is hormonally-driven can actually stimulate a dormant follicle into producing more hair quicker. They also distort the root if done repeatedly, leading to hair growing at strange angles. And you've got to let the hair grow to quite a length before you can repeat the exercise. It can also damage the skin and discolor it. Long-term use of waxing also causes bad wrinkles.
On the other hand, where your hormones are completely under control and in the female range, waxing may remove the hair for a very long time and regrowth can be weaker.
There are downsides to whatever way you remove hair.
Chemical depilatories strong enough to remove the hair are very likely to burn the skin, cause swelling and cause long-term discoloration of the skin.
Laser is also liable to cause burning and discoloration and in any case only works effectively on a dark hair/light skin combinantion.
Electrolysis is liable to cause scarring and discoloration of the skin.
Bleaching can make you appear to have a glowing moustache and beard when you're seen against the sunlight.
Shaving moustache or beard growth is thought of as being very masculine and if you use a wet razor can coarsen the skin. However, using a men's-type rechargeable razor is the best answer I've found. I reckon that the most suitable for a woman are those from the men's range of Philips/Norelco razors (Philishave outside the US).
I use electrolysis as needed (very rarely now). I haven't had any discoloration, although I have very fair skin. Not sure what kind of skin the discoloration happens with. I've not had any scarring whatsoever. I know it's expensive, but save your money because it has brought me peace.
i've been using a trimmer and plucking the black hairs, i don't know what to do otherwise, they are almost like plastic they are so thick and black so they stand out like neon signs & i can't afford electrolysis yet
AWW! I know how you feel. I swear not to pluck, but there are those ones that will stick out even if you trim them, that you can't get close enough to the skin to remove. I was so irritated by my electrolysist when I asked her what to do besides plucking. she said, "cut it down to the skin." I was like, yeah right, like I only trim hairs because they're long or something, like cutting the hair would make it invisible. A lot of women have no conception of what it's like to have the shadow.
I was told the same! No plucking, by an electrolysist. Then I moved on to laser and found that to be much more effective. I hate shaving with a passion but it is now the only way I do it in between laser sessions.

To those who're having, or have had electrolysis. You're allowed to keep the hair down in-between sessions? I thought you had to let it grow out until all the sessions were done, or until you wanted to stop. :o
you can shave or use a depilatory cream between sessions. anything that takes the hair out at the root is a no no. i was just told that mine had to be visible and able to be grasped with tweezers in order for the area to be worked on.
I don't doubt that plucking is a no-no if you are having electrolysis- but I have to add my 2 cents to this anti-plucking thread.
I have been plucking my upper lip for 10 years, maybe more. It has caused no increase in the amount or thickness of hairs. The only times that the hair has increased, I have been able to observe it increasing other places I don't want it (my bum) which tells me it was hormonal... for me, tweezing is the only real option.
I can't let a moustache get long enough to wax. I WILL NOT SHAVE. That led to the single worse hair explosion ever. I can't afford laser right now. The hairs stay gone for days or weeks, and its under control because I spend two minutes doing it each day. Tweezing + Vaniqa was very effective, but I had to stop that b/c of my BFP.
Anyway, it is just as viable an option to some women as anything else.

...snipped
i don't think the problem is with the thickness of the hair that you're seeing, but rather the strength of the hair at the root. normally i take what non-medical people say with a grain of salt but i'm spending thousands for this so i'm not willing to do anything to jeapordise the outcome. vaniqa isn't available here anyway . ultimately, though, i think it's best to do what you're comfortable with and what you can afford.

I would use tiny scissors and cut in between sessions. At the very beginning I had three sessions a week. Less and less came back and then they were gone completely. Then I decided to try and have kids, so when I went off the pill the hair started coming back again, although not as bad. I continued to see her while pregnant. I had two children - after my second I went back once a month for cleanup for about a year, and now they're gone again.
It's not for everyone, laser may work better. For me it was just that I had about a bunch of the hard black plastic-y hairs
and she was able to get each and every one of them in a 15 minute session.
