I was dx with PCOS/borderline insulin resistance in January and have been taking glucophage XR. My dh says he's worried about me b/c I continue to eat sweets and he thinks I should cut out all sugar. No doctor has told me that I need to change my diet and I am not overweight. What were you all told or what have you done about your diets? Thanks.

I am not going to claim to know much about PCOS - I was just diagnosed in Jan. But, my RE told me I don't need to worry about my diet (I have a sweet tooth, also and am thin). But, my insulin was a 7, which is in the normal range. I don't know if that had anything to do with his telling me not to worry about my sugar...
Hopefully someone else will have more info for you.
Just kidding, I didn't cut out sugar (for halloween I ate a 5lbs back of candy rockets). I did cut down pasta and bread as much as possible. I'm also a coke addict (diet coke) and I didnt cut that out. I just took away what I eat the most of which was pasta, I was eating 2 quarts or a box of Kraft Dinner for a meal.
I'm not sure about the sugar if you are IR but for PCOS I did not cut out sugar and couldn't cut out sugar because I'm also addicted to sugar (fruit loops, alpha bits, candy, chocolate) I would suggest just cutting down on where you get your most carbs and sugars from.
I also didn't need to lose weight (5'5", 128 lbs) I just needed to get AF back in order.

I have cut a lot of sugar out of my diet on the recommendation of my doctor. First, I stay away from 'white' carbs. Second, I don't eat much added dietary sugar (ie, cakes, candies, soda, etc.). I used to be a sugar addict...and I also used to have hypoglycemic episodes.
Since cutting down my sugar intake, I feel great - I'm not as tired, my cycles are like clockwork (Vitex helped that, too), and I'm not as irritable. I will admit that I haven't sworn off sugar...I still eat cake once a month at our office birthday bash, and I'll eat other treats every once in a while, too. However, I do notice that once I eat it, I crave it!

Pg thanks to: Vitex 400 mg x 2, Dong Quai 565 mg x 4, EPO 500/1000mg, multivitamin, B complex, moderate exercise, low sugar/mod carb diet
Thank you guys so much for your help. I guess I shoud talk to my doctor about this. I don't eat a lot of pasta, bread or other strachy foods but I have a major sweet tooth.
Can you tell me what Vitex is and what it does? Why is it good for PCOS?

I cut out ALL refined sugar from my diet. SUGAR IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN HAVE WHEN YOU HAVE PCOS! Instead of having cookies or candy, try eating fruit, which has natural sugar and at least will up your fiber intake. Fiber increases insulin sensitivity.
Taking glucophage and eating sugar is like one cancelling out the other. It doesn't match.
I'm also a thin cyster and didn't test positive for IR either so to speak.
Over the past few months I have been making every effort to help myself by modifying my diet. I try to eat more vegetbales and fruit, (although I do limit even my fruit intake because although it's "natural" sugar, it's still sugar.) I eat chicken and fish most of the time, and drink only water. (NO sodas or fruity drinks). Ive found that I have alot more energy and I feel good.
It may be that the imbalance that causes PCOS in your body that is linked in some measure to Insulin Resistnace may be CAUSING your sugar cravings. Don't give in, girl! It's like a vicious cycle. I totally agree with your doctor.
Good luck!
