Question Do u see a naturopath or do u medicate yourself?

Hi girls
I am currently looking for a naturopath who has some idea about PCOS (VERY DIFFICULT TASK!!!). I am taking a variety of herbs, vits at present. I was just wondering how many of you see a naturopath and how many medicating themselves? For those who have or are seeing a naturopath....is it helpful and effective? Thanks is advance for your responses.
Amy

Hello Amy

I've been seeing a medical herbalist since last Sept. It has been very good although still trial and error. AF for me in the past has been about every 12 months and I have had three af since taking herbs. AF is lasting for a month at a time so last time I saw the herbalist he changed the herbs. Its good because he has a good idea about which herbs are causing effects i don't want and can suggest ones to refine the good changes. Its also good seeing someone who asks after my diet (just general good eating habits rather than specific weight loss)and yoga and hopefully embarass me into sticking with it.

I found my herbalist by asking in the shop that sells herbal remedies. It was also reassuring that he was a member of a professional body - perhaps there are some orgs on the web who give you details about their members (sorry i'm in uk so its no use telling you who my chap is with)

Best of luck whatever you decide to do

Amanda C

hi
i tried treating myself to no avail i did 4 months of virtex this was the only herb i stuck with for any lenght of time i also tried dongquai, wild yam, licourice, spi and a few more.
I'm one of the most impatient people in the world and just couldn't wait for results i wanted them that day.
i also found the more research i did the more i swapped and changed things beacause i read that many things saying to do things differently.
if i try the herbs again i think i would find some one who knew what they were on about.

I see a naturopath whom I found through www.findnd.com
She's really helpful. I figured it'd be best to see a ND, knowing that my system is sooo out of whack I want someone who knows what she's doing rather than me trying to cure myself and screwing my system even more.

Hi Amy,

I am currently doing a combination of both! I am seeing a naturopath who has given me a prescribed herbal mixture which she tweaks according to changes in my symptoms. I am also self-administering a combination of vitamin supplements (see my sig!)

I feel safer having herbs prescribed for me because they are much more of an unknown quantity than vitamins, and I am aware that they can be quite powerful. I would be afraid to make decisions about dosage while I am much more confident about using supplements.

I am due to see my naturopath next week for the first time since before I started using supplements, and will be getting her opinion on my choices. She is also a nutritionist and she has helped me address my dietary problems also (I seem to be lactose intolerant).

Funnily enough, she is Australian and is due to return to Sydney soon. I will ask her how to go about finding an accredited practitioner in Australia and post again if she can help, assuming that you haven't already found someone!
