Default Do you have a bump at the base of your skull?

I have had a bump there forever and only now I am wondering if that is normal! It's very hard like it's part of my skull. It's right at the base and covered by my long hair of course. Does anyone else have this? Are there any hormone glands back there? The pituitary is in the front of the head, right?

I actually have one in my neck close to my skull. It is a possibility I think that it is pituitary.

Jamin and Kittycat, your pituitary is way inside the middle of your skull, tucked up under your brain. Actually, if you wanted to find it, it'd be easier to head up your sinuses looking for it than to start at the back of your head. (Actually, surgery on the pituitary gland is often done through the nasal cavity.) It's closer to the front, buy no way can you feel it. And no, there are no other glands at the base of your skull, top of your neck, that you could feel.

We all have different shape heads/skulls, or course, and we all have slightly different bumps and depressions on our heads. Notice how some people look so much better with shaved heads, than some other people?

Funny trivia...back in the 19th century, people called "phrenologists" actually tried to develop a "science" where you could tell stuff about a person's character and personality and intelligence by "reading" the bumps on their head. Like, a certain pattern of bumps meant you were the criminal type, or hopelessly low IQ, or the noble intelligent type. Hah. Obviously it was a lot of nonsense.

Kittycat, are you taking about a new bump, or something that has probably been there all along? Of course, have the doc check it out, but it's probably just your particular lump!

I have two, like Carla. Unfortunately, I'm sure I also have a head that would look horrible shaved!

I have this too!!! omg I cant beleive someone else is made this way lol
My mom felt it when I was about 10 and took me to the doctor he said it was normal. It is just the way I am made. I have MRI of my brain and skull last year and nothing was there so I was normal. I was worried about it of course.

These could be your lymph nodes....often called glands...I know that when I have a cold - under my jaw, my "glands" swell. Anyway, you have these at the base of your skull as well, and if they swell it could indicate and infection such as Mono and many other things. If it something that doens't feel like part of your skull - is new-or hurts - you should probably see your doctor.

I have one in the lower back center of my head, right at the top of my neck. It's about the size of an M&M. I asked a doc about it once cuz it was just so weird feeling, and I was told it was an enlarged sweat gland and very common.... maybe that's what you got too? Either way your not alone with funny lumps!!

This may not be what you describe (it does not feel bony), but a change in fat deposits called "buffalo hump" is often seen in PCOS and Cushing's; it's due to an excess cortisol secretion.

I've got the Buffalo Hump!!!!!!!!! I hate it so much!!!!!!!!

I made sure I wore my hair down at my wedding to cover it. It makes your body shape look so bad.

I think the bump is part of my skull because it's really hard like bone and I've had it as long as I can remember. It still makes me wonder though because it's kind of wierd and it feels like a big bump! next time I see my doctor Im going to ask him about it. It's way above my neck and right at the base of my skull.

I have a few "little bumps" on my head. One in the front... one on either side (towards the top of my head).. now noticing a very small "bump" growing behind my right ear.

I've brought this to dr's attention - he said it's normal. As long as as it doesn't give you problems (hitting it when brushing or wasking your hair) he said "don't worry about it".

Like sugarbug one of mine is the size of an M&M and the rest are pretty small... although they are raised of the skin.

I thought it was just me with those type of "bumps". Now I don't feel so alone.
