Last time I had to have a D&C because my body was taking too long to m/c (like, over a month from the time we knew I had a blighted ovum and I still hadn't passed anything - but the stress was getting to me very badly). . . so I don't know how this goes or what to expect. My OB keeps saying that the moment I feel crampy or start to bleed, I should go to the ER. Yet it seems that others haven't done that, esp this early on (6-8 wks) and it's all ok in the end. So, how do you decide what to do? anyway, I am mildly crampy now, but that could be a lot of things. I don't want to go to the ER every day just because I don't know what the heck is going on!!! Advice?

I never went to the ER w/ any of my m/c's. My RE said to NOT go to the ER and to call the emerg. # for him if there were any important questions/issues that couldn't wait until the next day. Only if you're bleeding profusely for hours on end and going through a pad every 1/2 hour or so, would I go to the ER.

I didn't have to go to the ER with either of mine. With the first one, I spotted from 8/17 through 8/24. On 8/25, the cramps got worse and I was going through a pad an hour, but I just stayed near the toilet and never felt the need to visit the ER. I had my D&C on the 26th (but it had been scheduled for a while.)
With the second two, I was only 4.5 weeks along (lost both at 18 DPO) but it was more like a heavy period, with extra clots and worse-than-usual cramps on the first day. I took ibuprofen for the cramps on the first day and didn't have cramps after the 2nd day (although the clots continued through the end of the bleeding, which lasted 5-6 days like a normal period for me.)
Hope this helps.

I would advise not to go to the ER, unless you find the pain unbearable or you go through more than 1 pad in a hour. I would contact your OB first in any case.
You will probably have more painful cramping than your periods, so be prepared for that. I wasn't prepared for the pain and was wondering myself if there was something wrong and if I should go to the ER. But after I went through it, I realized that my uterus was expelling its contents through mini contractions that caused a lot of pain. Since you're so early, you probably won't have too much pain. But if you are in a lot of pain, you can try to get on all fours on the floor and try to lean onto a couch. I did this and it helped a lot when my pain was the most intense.
This time around it's been a lot easier physically. Thinking of you and hoping you get through this soon.

I went to the ER once during a m/c and I will never do it again. The bumbling ER doc that had to do my pelvic exam was horrid. He had no clue what he was doing and it was very uncomfortable.

i'm with everyone else, unless you're in extreme pain or bleeding a real lot, don't go to the ER. my micarriages happened at home and i did have to have a d/c because the first m/c didn't expel completely and i was bleeding for a long time. i think you heal better (mentally) when you're in the comfort of your own home and surrounded by people who love and not staff of the hospital.

I did not go to the ER. My midwife told me to NOT go, and to call them if I was going through more than one pad an hour due to bleeding. I bled for 12 days on & off, and had pretty bad cramping the first two days of the m/c. I never even had an exam, they just keep taking blood to make sure my hcg levels are dropping. It's better to be at home & with your dh than in a cold, sterile, uncaring environment.
I didn't go either. I made an emergency appt for my dr, had bloodwork, went home and cried. I already knew.......

I did not go to the ER when I mc but wish that I would have since my Dr.'s off ice was closed (4th of July) I knew that the mc was coming due to the spotting that kept increasing. When I mc, the pain was quite intense and took me by surprise. Ibuprofin did not cut it. I called bc I was soaking a pad an hour and the pain, but the answering service did not put me through to the doc. (for which they called and apologized to me for). For me, it was quite scary and painful. I even had the urge to push and out came the sack containing my baby. I would have preferred not to have to have dealt with that. My sis-n-law had an impending mc and the doc gave her some pain med to help her at home. She said that was very helpful.
I went to the ER when had my m/c. It was a lot of waiting around and was frustrating having to wait for someone else to tell me what was happening with my body but I'm glad I did. I was not prepared for the amount of pain, and I am not a wuss. Everything was right there if I needed anything and my dh was with me - I got treated warmly by the nurses and the doctors, it was good to have people who know what they were doing reassurring me throughout the whole thing.
But it seems that everyone is different

I will never go to the ER again for a miscarriage. They didn't do squat for me, cathaterized me, stuck me in a room and checked my blood pressure every few hours. I'd rather be at home.

fairyflies - That is awful! Why on earth did they catheterize you? I can't believe that. What's the point? I'm so sorry you had to go through that, it does NOT help the mental or physical healing/recovery process.
