"What is breast hypoplasia and what are the causes?
Breast hypoplasia is the technical term referring to underdevelopment of the breast. We also often refer to this as "insufficient mammary tissue", because it is the inadequate development of the glandular tissue that is a problem more than mere size. Hypoplastic breasts can vary in cup size but often have an "empty sac" look to them, rather than the normal filling out of the breast. It is not unusual to see one breast markedly larger than the other, more than the usual small asymmetry." http://www.obgyn.net/displayarticle....childers-chats
You can find photos of breast hypoplasia by typing that into google and using the photos option.

My right breast looks at least a cup size larger than the other. When I was around 16 we began to notice it and my mum took me to a doctor to see what is wrong, they did an u/s and found nothing out, it was never looked into further. I could have been dx with PCOS nearly 10 years ago if the awareness was there!

Points: 324.22 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 324.22 | Yes I have tubular breasts. My areolas are also extremely large. It is very embarrasing and heart breaking at times. Just another thing that makes me feel abnormal. Noone has ever dx me but I know. I've never seen any breasts that look like mine before. I noticed them as they grew. Noticed they were not growing like everyone else's. |

My Mood: Points: 103,527.36 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 103,527.36 | I'm not 100% sure I have it but from the research I've been doing on it I suspect I do. My breasts don't even fill a B cup and when I was pregnant with dd my breasts only filled the B cup! I had no engorgement and was told by my gp to stop breastfeeding b/c I had low milk supply. My breasts don't look exactly like the pictures but do have a tubular shape with large nipples for my breast size. And I've always found it rather odd that I'm a big girl with small breasts! Is there any way of getting hypoplastic breasts dx?? My dh is happy with my breasts and he gets upset when I talk about getting implants after having #2. At this point I just want to be able to breastfeed #2 and will do whatever it takes. I've actually contacted a lactation consultant regarding this very issue. I'll let you all know when I hear back from her.

Mommy1- I'm glad you are seeing an LC about this. I don't know what kind of doc would dx this. It seems it would be more in the area of study of a gyn than a GP. According to what I have read just having this problem doesn't exclude breastfeeding, but it's good to know ahead of time. There are types of meds and herbs that have been known to help develop the milk producing areas of the breasts. I had very low milk supply and never got the full look of a breast feeding mom. Not one of my docs or the LC commented that this might be a concern. |

For those that don't know, this means they point south (and in my case, sag). I am going to have a reduction after I have (if I have) children. Even when I was thin (maybe a size 10 or so) I was overflowing a D cup. I evidently get this from my mom's side of the family (who are tiny women with huge boobs). My dad's side of the family are bigger women with tiny boobs. I guess I got the backwards combination (big woman, huge boobs).

My Mood: Points: 3,613.07 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,613.07 | My breasts grew two different sizes, the right was considered tubular. I had implants put in 9 years ago when i was 17 to try to even them out, but they are still not even. It is very embarrassing to have two breasts that look different. My insurance paid for my surgery because I could prove that mentally it was effecting me. I need to have a second surgery, but I am having a hard time getting them to pay for it now. I asked my PCOS doc if this condition is caused by PCOS and he said he suspects it is, but not enough research has been done and it can't be proved right now... Good luck to anyone with this problem I know it sucks.

Points: 283.54 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 283.54 | I want regular functional boobies. I've not tried to conceive yet, but I fear my breasts are hypoplastic. They seem like they started to develop normally, but began to change around age 18. I seem to have somewhat "normal" breasts close to my body, then they become tubular about halfway out from their full development. I really pray that the small amount that did develop will be sufficient, but I've worried for years now that I won't be able to breastfeed, like I really would love to do.
However, if I can carry children to term, I'll be incredibly thankful! |
