Question Do you think your mom had PCOS?

I'm pretty sure mine did, from hearing her talk about her irregular periods and seeing certain physical characteristics in old photographs of her.

What are your suspicions about your family's PCOS tendencies?

I have absolutely no idea why there is such an enormous space at the top of my post. I've tried to edit it out, but I can't.

Jeez

I do not think my mother has/had PCOS. The only trouble I know of her having is heavy long periods, which I am guessing was probably endometriosis (her family has a strong history of endo and fibroids).

My mom is the same height as me (5'7") and is trying to gain weight. She is up to 112 pounds. She is very thin, small framed. No missing AF, no fertility trouble, no blood sugar issues, and no hair issues. I look gigantic next to her

I do have suspicions about my dad's family though. There are several that strike me as probably having PCOS. Also, both sides of my family have very high rates of diabetes, which probably doesn't help me at all.

Stacie

I think sometimes my whole family had something and didn't tell me!LOL! I recently found out I have 2 cousins that had to take Clomid plus other fertility meds to get preg. My mother would have irregular cycles and my granmother had fibroids. Well that is just on my mom's side.....On my dad's side my grandmother is a diabetic and I have an aunt w/ all the symptoms of PCOS EXCEPT,get this EXCEPT.....irregular AFs.

Very definitely! I know my mom had PCOS from talking about her medical history and that of her family medical history. She's even had Ovarian Drilling 3 times! Although that's not the term she used. Back then she didn't know what it was, her doc just told her it was necessary. She got pregnant 3 times while on BCP to try and control other problems too. My Mom, her Mom and My mom's oldest sister have all had reproductive cancers. So I have a very high risk myself.

Now I believe my sister may have it (we are only half though, sharing a father). So there could be the possibility that it runs on my dad's side as well, or it could be my sister's maternal side she gets it from. She's had fertility problems for as long as I can remember. I don't think she's ever wanted to admit it though. I don't blame her. It can be really hard to talk about PCOS sometimes!

My mom had irregular cycles but I don't think she has pcos. However, my father is a diabetic and quiet a few ppl in my family mostly on his side including my paternal grandmother also have diabetes. I suspect it's from my dad.

My mother is the most regular women in the world every 28 days to the tee, you could sent an alarm to it. But I have 3 sisters, the oldest one just recently got dxed at the age of 34, second sister has most of the symptoms but dx, and third just recently started developing cysts on her ovaries. it really seems odd that all four of us would have the same problems that alone says alot.

No, mine didn't/doesn't. I think the diet then was a lot better than it is now, and that has a lot to do with it. But I have a cousin who is very overweight and never was able to have kids (she adopted) and has other sypmtoms, so she might. My sister might, too, but neither of them has been diagnosed, or really even tested for it much. They are the only ones in my family I would suspect, on either side. That doesn't mean I don't think the tendency is hereditary, just not that much of it in my family.

I'm certain PCOS runs in my family whether they know it or not.

My parents were married for 10 years and my mother had one miscarriage and me. My mother did take BCPs for at least part of this time and my dad did 2 tours in Viatnam. Still, she said she had a very difficutl time getting pregnant. I've just now gotten her to read some about PCOS, though.

My paternal g-mother had 1 still born daughter and my father. She was born in 1906 and my dad was born in 1939. I suspect she had something that effected her fertility, but she died when I was very young.

One of my mother's sisters has never had any children, has thinning hair, diabetes, excessive weight, etc. Classic symptoms.

One of my 1st cousins (maternal) has 2 children. The first was after a 1 failed marriage, several years of trying, and at least 1 miscarriage. The 2nd was a surprise several years later after a car accident (weird story). She has many of the typical physical symtoms. Her sister has never married or had children. She has all the typical symptoms.

I have a very large (my greatgrandmother's didn't have any problems with fertility) extended family on my mother's side. I know I see a lot of overweight women with some facial hair and some hair thinning at family reunions. NOONE in my family has been diagnosed with PCOS (my mother would know if they had), but I'm certain that those I've mentioned have it. For that reason I'd assume there are others I don't know well enough to recognize the symptoms.

I just don't think PCOS is diagnosed a lot in my neck of the woods. It seems that DRs haven't really gotten on the ball with this until recently. I wasn't "diagnosed" until I was having problems ttc. Even then noone seemed to care about the PCOS, only the infertility. I'm in a different part of the state now and have had better success (i.e. Metformin prescription).

No. I don't believe that my mom has PCOS. Her cycle is like clockwork, has had no fertility issues, and no hair issues. My maternal grandmother and my mom's sister have never had any problems either. I believe that it comes from my dad's side of the family. My dad has diabetes and although I'm not sure if my paternal grandmother had any af or infertility issues I know that she had diabetes also.

My mom doesn't have PCOS either. She's gotten pregnant easily 3 times. She has no excess hair whatsoever and has a head full of nice thick hair. (It's pretty sad when I have to be jealous of my mother.) It must have come from my dad's side but I guess that'll always be a mystery. He was adopted and lost all contact with his mom and siblings. I have heard that his bio mom was balding. But then again she had like 9 children, so I doubt it had to do w/ PCOS. I just hope my daughter is lucky and didn't inherit it from me.

I'm not sure, I suspect she might do. My mum is thin, but does quite strictly control what she eats. She also had rather long cycles, about 35 days I believe, she's quite hairy, and she had difficulty in getting pregnant. My parents tried for years, but didn't have much help from the medical community (this was 30 years ago). They had started thinking about adoption when my mum finally got pregnant. She had wanted several children, but it didn't happen, I'm an only child. She's never been diagnosed though.

Yeah I do... So did my grandmother and great grandmother. My mom had problems with miscarriages. BCP is what helped her get PG with me. and this was 27 yrs ago. She didn't realize this at the time. My sister also has it.. she was the only one Dx with it. She is young and has cysts all over her ovaries, barely gets a period maybe once a year.. and has all the other signs like weight gain, and the hair.

i am more like my mom.. I have a period every month and ovulate.. but we both have the hair.. the only reason my mom doesn't have the weight gain is she's hyper active and can't sit still and eat's very little and when she does eat it's all very healthy food.. lots of veggies, fruits and baked or grilled meats. I on the other hand eat more (I am a larger frame then her so that doesn't help) my biggest down fall is I do not exercise and I tend to sit way to much lol Our other common thing is miscarriages.

My grandmother and great grandmother. both had hair loss... weight gain in the abdomen, large babies and diabetes. oh and skin tags (Which I have never gotten and neither has my mom.. but my sister has them) It's almost like it got worse with every generation.

Default I think PCOS runs on my Mom's side

Hi there.. my family history:

Me: had ovarian surgey in oct 2003 to remove cysts. irrgeular preoids. Some hair (not 2 much). cysts usualy occur right after my peroid. TTC for 3 yrs. can be very moody.

Mom: Had irregular peroids. Had a large cysts when she conceived me. Had surgey when she was 3 mths pg (with me) to remove the cyst. Although she wasn't overweight in her younger days, she is strugglingto keep her weight down in recent yrs. Borderline diabetic.

Mom's Sis (my Aunt G): Had a ovarian cyst that rupchured (SP?) and was taken in 4 emerency surgey.

My cuz (Aunt g's daughter): Had to have ovarian sugey to remove a cyst. Although, she has a daughter, i think she is having trouble conceiving 2nd child.

I think it runs on my Mom's side of the family. All the ladies on my mom's side had theroid issues (i.e mostly under active theroid). I've Been tested and nothing yet.
basically all the different health conditions my Mom has had - she has past them down to me.

~Janet~
