Unhappy Doc reluctant to prescribe Met

Hi ladies,

I was recently diagnosed with pcos for irreg. cycles, lh:fsh ratio > 3 and test= 86. Ever since coming off Aldactone to ttc my acne has come on with a vengeance and it's taken such a toll on me. Hubby and I have been ttc for about 7 months since our wedding. I was referred to an obgyn to diagnosed me and she wants me to start on bcps. Well I don't tolerate these at all and last time on them felt like I was going nuts! I am a nurse and mentioned Metformin as a possibility and she shot me down right away because I'm thin and am non-IR (I'm 4'11,105lbs). I have decided to not go the BC route and try naturally for now and have been thinking of trying Soy. This whole ordeal would be so much more tolerable if I didn't have to deal with the aweful acne. The idea of Met is just so appealing to me because it will eventually help to lower my testosterone levels and hubby and I can still ttc if I take it.

Anywho, I was wondering if any of you Met takers had trouble getting it prescribed at first and if so how you were able to convince your Doc!

I just started on metformin about a week ago. My RE didn't mention it at first, and after another round of clomid failed to produce an O, I asked him if I could try it. I told him that "it shouldn't hurt me, it might help, and it's cheap, so why not?" so he said okay, as long as I can tolerate the side effects ok. I don't know if it's helping or not, it's only been a week, but the GI discomfort isn't that bad as long as I gradually increase the dose. (I'm supposed to get up to 850mg BID) Good luck with your doctor.

Thanks DD, that was a good way to put it when asking! I am supposed to speak with her today to go over some test results and I'm going to tell her I'm not going to take the bcps and will suggest the Met again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I have a really strong feeling it will help me. Either way I think I'm going to try a soy cycle and see if it makes a difference. I'm eager to know how it works out for you so keep us posted .
