Default doc said I don't have PCOS but I am PCOS "Like"?

He said that the only symptom I am showing is that the blood tests are coming back as if I have PCOS. He said that I have no excessive hair, overweight, a lot of acne (even though I think I have acne). He wants to put me on Metformin. He said that I technically do not have PCOS but that my body is reading it that way so I am PCOS "Like". They found over 30 cysts on my left ovary and about 25 cysts on my Right ovary. The last time I got a real AF was Nov 20th. Then really really light on Jan 20. The reason why I even went to this R.E. was so that DH and I can get pg (DH has Azoospermia). So do you think it is the right step for him to give me Metformin? Excuse my ignorance on this....this is the first RE I have seen.

Cysts and hormone issues is really the only symptoms you should need to be PCOS... and isn't that what a "syndrome" is, anyway? A collection of symptoms?

My dr. diagnosed me PCOS--the only symptoms I have are the hormones and no AF. I have not had an ultrasound to look at my ovaries/cysts yet to know how many are there.

Exactly. I'm thin, I don't have facial hair, I don't have acne and I don't have a problem with cysts. I did however experience problems with my cycle (AF only 3 or 4 times a year) and I couldn't get pg. My blood tests revealed the standard PCOS hormone imbalance and I was given Met. As a result, I now have regular cycles...and a daughter and a son! Personally, I would look into finding a new RE who is more experienced with PCOS. It took me years to find one, but it was worth it!

I'm reading PCOS and your fertility (Harris) and it actually explains PCOS Syndrome X and Syndrome Y. It looks like hormone inbalances just manifest themselves in different people in the same way--but it's the hormone inbalance that is technically "PCOS."

I am thin also and don't have alot of the symptoms. I have always had menstrual irregularities.. When I was young they were about 45-90 days apart. Always thought it was because I was very thin & active. Have always had moderate acne. No excess hair except last few years a couple just below my belly button. Lately my periods starting following a new pattern though. I got my tubes tied & no longer need BCP so I think it finally started to come to a boil. They would be 3-4 days on 1-2 days off then back on again for 1-3 days and about 31 or so days apart. I have increased DHEA levels and slighltly elavated cholesterol.. Dr. just started me on Metformin 5/5/06. Looking back this makes much more sense than I was just thin. The acne esp. even when I used Rx's it still never seemed to go away completely.

My doctor said exactly the same thing to me! I have no outward signs of PCOS but my bloodwork came back with a very elevated LH and a sonogram showed many cysts on my ovaries. But I still get my period fairly often (8-10 times a year) after years of getting my period like clockwork.

I also show no insulin resistance... yet. I'm asking for more tests.

I work in medicine and I'm very unsure about what qualifies as PCOS or not. It seems very loose and as much as our symptoms vary, so do the definitions of PCOS!

In my opinion, the comment from your doctor was....I hate to say it...but dumb. You don't have to have all the other symptoms to have PCOS! I don't have them either, and I was just prescribed metformin by my doctor. I did have an ultrasound done and have very cystic ovaries and irregular cycles, and infertility problems. She said not all women have all the symptoms. Those are just the most "evident" because they can be seen. If you are TTC, I would take the metformin- but read some of the forums first because it isn't pleasant in the beginning. It does help most of us start ovulating pretty quickly though- I am excited! Good luck! :-)
