I went to my OBGYN a few days ago and my I asked her if there was anything that could help with my Insulin Resistance and she said "no". But I was thinking the whole time about Glucophage....but I didn't ask her, she seemed resolute. She has a lot of experience with PCOS patients but I am wondering if I should look at getting a new doctor because I am not sure she is willing to do all it takes to help me.
So, what do you think, should I look for a new doctor?

I would, the first thing my OBGYN said was "PCOS with Insulin Resistance" and asked his nurse the name of that "medication they give for PCOS now"....which was Met.
Good luck!

it never hurts to get a second opinion, especially when you know that they are wrong. there are loads of drs out there that dont know what they are doing.

ttc naturally for the first time just came off 5 rounds of clomid 50mg, O'ed each time taking metformin, prenatals, folic acid, prometrium, and baby asprin. Started to O naturally December 2006
Thank you all for replying! I think I might find a new doc because this one seemed like she was so sure there was nothing for it and even her own daughter has PCOS. She also said one of the best things for IR was to get the lap-band....as if I hadn't already tried.
I like the doctor but I just don't feel like she really cares that much about addressing the side effects of PCOS and IR. The only thing she has given me for my PCOS was birth control to regulate my periods, nothing else.
Yeah...I think I've decided I need another doctor, one who understands PCOS much more.

I was diagnosed with bad insulin resistance just recently and my gyno said I needed to go on Metformin immediately and follow a low GI diet.
I strongly recommend you see someone else.
Good luck honey!

Hi Twilight. I agree with all the other posters. Obviously there are ways to help with insulin resistance and you're doctor just isn't willing to help! My general practioner told me the same thing (before I was diagnosed with PCOS by my gynocologist). He actually told me that the only thing to help was to lose weight since insulin resistance only occurs when you are overweight (he wouldn't even test me for it). Of course, I wasn't able to lose weight at all (even after eating only 900 calories a day and exercising 2 hours a day/5 days a week). I refuse to go back to him for any reason and sought out answers from another doctor who was actually willing to listen to me after I had done a lot of research. Don't give up trying to get glucophage or whatever else will help you with the insulin resistance...even if that means switching doctors! Good luck!

Thanks everybody! My OBGYN said my Insulin level is 12.6 and the norm should be below 10. She said mine "isn't that bad" is that true? But I am having a heck of a time trying to lose weight. It took me like 6 months to lose 22 pounds even though I was working out 5 days a week for an hour doing cardio and weights and eating a low calorie diet.
I think I need to be on Met and therefore I think I need a second opinion and should consult another doctor.

My gynocologist told me the same thing...that my insulin resistance (when given the blood test) really wasn't that bad...but my history of not being able to lose weight (just like you're saying) made her diagnose me with it as well as PCOS. I've been on Met for about 6 weeks now, have a high protein, low sugar diet, and exercise whenever I can...and I have finally lost about 8 pounds (which would have been impossible before being on Met).

I am so glad I found you asking this question because when I was diagnosed I didnt really know a lot about PCOS or the treatment options. And he told me I had PCOS and IR...even took me in his personal office to explain everything in detail -instead of me having to sit in the exam room-. and prescribed bcps. It made me feel pretty comfortable...but I came here and started reading and finding out everything by myself, and BCPs are SO not working for me this time around, I seem to always gain weight on them, and I cant sleep and having just an awful time with them... I want off! And I want to try and see if I can get a prescription for Met. I am thinking of making an appointment again next month when we have a little extra money and see if I can talk to him about that.
