Default doctor confusion

hey everyone,
like many of you, I always knew something wasn't right...
last week my my doctor confrimed that I have PCOS.
the only thing was is that he got his medical assistant to do it over the phone.
The med. assistant told me to take my birth control and lose weight ( I am 5'4 134 lbs) and basically hung up the phone.
Maybe I am being immature about this... but I wanted the doctor to sit me down and explain to me what the issue was and how (or if) it could be corrected, instead of me having to do the research on me own.
How did your doctors' handle the situation?
This made me want to find a new gyno

Welcome cyster!

I'm sorry you were treated this way. I don't think you're being immature. They SHOULD explain and answer questions. I'm kind of hoping you will see a new doc. For me personally, BCP wasn't enough to really help me. Losing weight did help, but I don't believe docs should throw it out there like it's the only thing that can be done for PCOS. You have other choices. And I believe a good doc will encourage you in your weight loss, but understand that PCOS does usually make it a struggle.

:Stepping off soapbox: Sorry, I just went through some lousy docs before I found my good one. I don't like my cysters being treated this way. My doc that I have now (he's the one who diagnosed me) explained PCOS to me at that first visit, and he has spent many visits since then (4 years ago) answering my questions and concerns after the initial shock wore off!

I'm glad you found us. You will find lots of great info here and you will also have the support of your cysters.

Hugs
Jenny

Hi
I'm 5'3" and I'm supposed to be (at the optimal weight) at 125; When I did your BMI it says your BMI is 23.0 which is shown as: Normal weight = 18.5-24.9.
You must not have much weight to lose so I can't see why they think losing weight would help that much. I think you are completely correct in thinking you should change your doc.
You'd probably benefit from going to an Endocronologist rather than a gyno for PCOS.
I envy your weight loss needed LOL
Best Wishes and I hope you find an Endo that takes the time to explain things with you ~ at an appointment!
:hugs:

I also had a really negative encounter with the first ob/gyn I saw about my symptoms. She wasn't interested in trying to find out what was wrong with me; in fact, she told me I was perfectly normal and that most women would be happy to have 40-50 day cycles (even though she knew I was TTC...). My second ob/gyn was much nicer, but missed a big PCOS red flag on my bloodwork. I didn't get any help or answers until I took it upon myself to see an RE. And--wow!--the help and answers I got! If you like your current doctor, make an appointment to see him and tell him about your phone encounter with the assistant and then tell him your questions. It might be that he doesn't know how clueless and rude his assistant is (I agree with Fuzzy Bear that you don't have much--if any--weight to lose. I'm about your size, and my RE referred to me as a "thin" case of PCOS). If he doesn't answer your questions and/or doesn't apologize profusely for the behavior and mal-advice of his assistant, then run out and don't look back! On the other hand, if you don't care for him or are indifferent about him, find yourself a good endo and call it a day. You are NOT being immature; you are absolutely right to think you deserve better treatment.

Best!

Thanks ladies...
you guys are great and give excellent advice. I am going to call my doctor and make an appointment so I can speak to him about my concerns and see how he handles it.
If I don't like they way he handles it I can always find a new doctor (there are a lot of them out there).
I am going to try to lose about 10 lbs though. I had a more normal cycle when I was 125 lbs.
Jenny you have a beutiful family thanks for the encouragement
same to you lablanca
Fuzzy thanks for that helpful info... it will help me keep track of everything
an J I wish I was as assertive as you when I was 14. I would have been diagnosed a lot earlier

First off welcome to SC. If I was you I would definately look for a new doctor. That was very rude first off for his assistant or whoever they were to call you and tell you to lose weight second off the doctor should have had you come in and discuss what to do next. I'm sorry you went through that I hope you find a doctor that is more experienced and sensitive to your needs.

Welcome!

I had a bad experience with a previous doctor but I have to say that i love my reproductive Endocronologist. She was the one that diagnosed me and when she did, she sat with me and explained to me what PCOS was and what my treatment options were. She let me decide what was best for me and then i had to go see her every 2 weeks too see how i was doing until my levels were all normal. I know go every 4-6months.
I would suggest getting a referral to an Endocronologist, who has more knowledge on PCOS.

Best wishes!

Hi UntaintedBliss

You have gotten some good suggestions, and sounds like you have a good plan in place, so I just wanted to say...

to SoulCysters

LaBlanca, Incredible that you first OB was telling you to be happy about having 40-50 day cycles, even though you were TTC, what an idiot!!! So glad you found an RE that knows how to treat PCOS

Yeah, she was a real treat. She had no idea why I burst into tears when she told me that I was "normal"...just shoved a Kleenex box at me and said that asinine thing about most women wanting longer cycles. She only did bloodwork because I insisted that something had to be wrong and then gave me an "I told you so" attitude when she called to say all of my hormone levels were "normal." (Of course, she just randomly took blood--not like my RE who knew to do it fasting and on CD3 or 4. I don't have a copy of those results, but I suspect that she, too, missed that my FSH/LH ratio was off, an indicator of PCOS.) My story (and those of so many others here) serves as a huge tip to people to keep going until you find a doctor who acknowledges that you're not crazy--that something IS wrong--and who is willing to find out what it is.

Hi Erica in IL,

Looks like you are new here too,

CD means Cycle Day. The day that your period (AF) starts is CD1.
