Unhappy Doctor Questions

Hi,

I'm new to the site, but I've been diagnosed with PCOS for about 2 years. I am having issues with finding a doctor who I feel is helpful. Currently, my doctor had me on Glucophage and Yaz--she says in July she's going to take me off everything to "see what happens". So far, if I'm not on birth control I have no period; my longest stretch was about a year. I have ridiculous weight gain ( about 100lbs in the last 4 years), and hair growth.

I'm in graduate school so I have next to no time for a solid exercise routine at the moment, and I can't afford to buy fresh meats and vegetables. The doctor said I should be on a 1000-1200 calorie a day diet, but I'm finding that difficult to follow. NOt so much the total calories, but counting them. Again, I'm really busy and I have to cook my food (its time consuming to figure out the calorie content of homemade pasta sauce, just an example).

I just want some answers or some recommendations as to what I can do to feel "normal" again.

Thanks!

Default It sucks, but it's true

I don't know if I'm the best person to answer your question b/c I'm not "fixed" yet, but I do know what's worked a little bit for me. Bottom line is that our diet is the root. I wasn't good at dieting or excercise so I got the lap band to help and it did. I'm hoping the band along w/ liquid metformin might do the trick. Right now I'm not on metformin but excercising almost daily, but I'm still not where I want to be. But I'm much better than I was 10 years ago. I feel like I felt when I was in my teens. Whereas before when I was 268 (28 yrs old) and in poor poor health I felt like I would imagine a 50 yr old would feel like. I hope I helped. At least try to get the metformin b/c it helps w/ cravings.

Default One more thing

It irritated me when docs would just stick me on BC. It's a temporary fix and I think it might do more damage for some w/ PCOS than good. I know with me - I tried 'em all and they all made my blood pressure go up! For me excercise and diet has helped me become regular again and I feel better than I did. The lap band just helped get the weight off and gives me more control. Metformin, like the band is a tool. If you're not so good at diet and excercise, Metformin or Glucophage - same thing will help.

Diet and excercise are the biggest keys to change about your lifestyle. Also a TOOL that can be added to the mix is Met. Good luck!
