Default Doctor says DM, BUT

I was dx PCOS in 1992 when TTC my first baby. Anyway since then I've had 2 children and tried to take metformin about 5 years ago when dx as IR.

I finally went back to the doctor last week. He wanted to check my fasting blood glucose as the one I had in Feb 2008 was 107 which indicates prediabetes and he wanted to check my A1C. Then he said we'd start on metformin.

My lab work came back and my A1C is 7.4 and my FBG was 148. Nurse called me back and said the dr said I have full-blown DM and he's starting me on metformin and wants me to meet with the diabetes educator.

I know the FBG was high the the A1C is a little high BUT I also know that you can't diagnose DM by an A1C reading and one high FBG. I told this to the nurse and told her I didn't want a DM dx on my chart until I saw the doctor again.

What do y'all think...DM or not? Should I push dr to do another FBC before dx? Help!

Thanks!

I think the doctor needs to do a glucose tolerance test on you. But, the A1c is a good indicator that you are diabetic. An A1C is a three month glucose average. To verify everything, it wouldn't hurt to do a GTT. HtH
