There are 2 doctors that I would highly recommend:
Dr. Sheila Laredo - If you are interested in treating the symptoms of PCOS but not concerned about TTC. Basically if you are looking to control your PCOS symptoms this is a good place to start.
Dr. Ellen Greenblatt - If you are interested in TTC, she will only see you if you are TTC. She is situtated out of the Mt. Sinai hospital and very knowlegeable and friendly.
I believe that you require a referral from your Family Physician or Gyn to see both of these wonderful ladies.

i would think that you need a referral. try calling them and ask them if you did. her specialty is fertility and surgery (for endometriosis, etc.) she is excellent.

I have a wonderful doctor and she is in the Bay and Dundas area. Her name is Dr. Redmond and she is wonderful. In order to see her, you would need a referral. For some reason I can't remember her number - my brain isn't functioning well today!! I will post it if you are interested.
Anyhow, in my internet travels to find a PCOS friendly doctor who can help me treat the symptoms PROPERLY - I am not trying to conceive right now - I happened upon one woman's posting about going to see a specialist team consisting of an endo, an ob gyn and something else who all work together and meet weekly to discuss cases etc. This girl waited 6 months to see them but was thrilled upon leaving their office.
I have emailed her and am waiting to see if she emails me back as I am wondering who this team was. I want to get in with the very best as my current GP does not seem to take PCOS seriously - although it was she who brought it up in first place. She does not believe that PCOS-ers are at increased risk of type II Diabetes for christ sake (pardon my french) which just floors me considering that fact that it is believed to be so closely linked with insulin resistance.
Anyhow - in a nutshell , I am tired of her indifference, and I am tired of going to someone who is reluctant to even send me for the proper tests. I don't think she knows much about PCOS to be honest. ANd i don't think she cares much either. Her way of thinking seems to be "I'm a GP go see an ObGyn if you want help with this". She had sent me to an ObGyn (they are both indian and maybe i'm jumping to conclusions but I think she only sent me to her becuz they have some sort of personal relationship and not becuz this obgyn is actually a PCOS specialist of sorts).
The ObGyn didn't even test me for anything - just looked at my ultrasound results and said - "well, it says here you have PCOS" - i have not had any tests to rule out cushings or any other metabolic or hormone related syndromes, I have not been tested for IR yet - nothing!!!! She put me on Diane and sent me on my way. I want some answers so now I'm on the hunt.
Just wanted to share my experience here, as I'm sure I'm not the only frustrated cyster on the boards as a result of indifferent or even ignorant doctors. I promise as soon as I hear about this wonder-team I will be right back here to post the good news on who they are! AFTER I'm on the waiting list of course! haha

Diablita -- I know how frustrating it is...I went through the same issues with my family doctor...it took her forever to diagnose me, and when she did, she just told me over the phone that I had PCOS and that I should exercise more to get my insulin down and take provera every 3 months to induce a period. I finally had to ask her to refer me to an ER, and thank god I did!
Good luck to you, I hope you find a great doctor who will start you on your journey to fight this syndrome!

You're lucky! My doc won't even talk to me on the phone. Even if i have a simple question required a yes or no answer, i have to book an appointment, miss at least half a day of work and wait for an hour to see her exasperated face for five minutes at the most...
SIGH
To top it all off, the obgyn she sent me to is on the other side of the city... and I don't drive.
I just can't wait until I get back to see the results of my fasting blood work from the other day so I can continue on my journey - get any necessary meds if applicable and just go back to living normally, with or without the meds.
In the meantime I had my physical the other day and I'm now 20 lbs heavier than during last year's physical... i'm now officially "OBESE" by BMI standards. GREAT.
Doc told me to watch sugar intake and carbs of course... i've been doing that anyhow but she said even MORE so... so i've been living on protein shakes and bars to fill me up before meals so i don't consume as much, and have been limiting my carbs IMMENSELY.
I hope it works!!!!
I'll keep you all posted....

Yes, she's really far for me too but I do drive so it's not so bad. I used to live 5 minutes from her clinic and I love her so much that I don't want to change doctors. Actually, since you're not TTC, that may not be the best option for you. Have you tried the York Central Hospital? It's not far from you and they have so many doctors there that you could get referred to. Here's the link:
I see Dr. Karen Glass, also from the Womens college, although I don't have her number handy. She is great, in my opinion. Very compassionate, and we are not TTC.. You do need a referal from your family dr first...
