I have a doctors appointment on Wednesday and am thinking of asking to come off Met. I don't really suufer with any side effects(except if I eat fatty foods!) but it just doesn't "feel right" anymore. I have been on Met for just over 2 years and upped the dosage to 2000mg about 6 months ago. As i've never had any tests done(long story - but I'm unlikely to have nay done as well) I am just going on what my body is telling me. Af has started to be late every month(I know this isn't a huge problem but since taking met I have been regular), I haven't lost any weight for 6 months and my depression has started to get worse again.
I have been thinking about this for a long time and I know that Met isn't a "miracle drug" but I am starting to worry that something else is wrong and my doctor is no help.
So my question is... What do you think I should do?
I dont really have any advice. I'm just wondering what you are going to switch to if you go off the met?
In my opinion, if met has regulated AF and at least stopped weight gain, it sounds like its working.
However, your the only one that knows whats right for you so definatley follow your instincts.
Good luck and let us know how it goes today
Chancy

O.K., I went to the doctors yesterday and it was so humiliating! I took my mum in with me this time so that I had some back up and I asked to have 4 sets of blood tests done. According to my doctor they are pointless and won't show anything(I am even more convinced now that she knows absolutely nothing about PCOS). I gave her some medical information that I got off this site and left it with her to read. Her main priority is to get me to come off the Metformin. As far as she's concerned I'm just taking it to lose weight. I get so frustrated with people! I only went to my won doctor because I had so much trouble with the consultant I was seeing. Why does everything have to be so difficult?
I'm so sorry things did go well Claire. I dont have an answer as to why doctors are so difficult. Trust me, if I knew...then I would understand mine.
What sort of bloodwork did you want to get done? Was it so you could see if the met was still working? If so, I would find a new doc and get them to run the tests. This is not an unreasonable request. You have the right to know what is going on in your body and why you are feeling the way you are. I know its easier said then done, but I suggest you find a new doc ASAP. You shouldnt have to see one that makes you feel silly for requesting simple bloodtests.
If you need to talk sometime, feel free to PM me. I cant offer much advice but I do have a shoulder to cry on

Thanks so much for all your support - it really means a lot. Chancy, I have asked to have my fasting glucose checked along with FSH, LH and Testosterone. I had a look to see if I could find another doctor - one who knows about PCOS but the only one I could find was the one that I complained about before being referred to my current doctor - so I think I better avoid him! Oh well, I'll just have to see how bad it gets when I get the results back! At least I've been 'allowed' to have them done!!
Really Claire?? I cant believe, with you having PCOS, that she thinks those tests are pointless
I just dont know what to tell you hun. Its really too bad that a new doc isnt an option. Well, at least she ran them
I share in that same feeling though. I had picked through almost all the docs in my town and none of them knew as much as I wanted them to know about PCOS. Finally, I found a doc that just moved here and made appointments with him.
He is well aware of what my goals are and has agreed that I can pretty much take/do what I want as long as I consult with him first and he agrees that it wont be of any harm. He realizes that I have done my homework and could probably teach him a thing or two about PCOS. I realize that there are a whole lot of diseases out there that the docs need to be familiar with, I just wish that when they have a patient with a particular problem that they arent experienced dealing with, they put a little effort into finding out at least the basics.
Anyways, sorry to rant.....I really hope that your doc comes around to her senses Claire. It really is terrible when not only we are faced with PCOS, but we also have to manage it without the full support of a doctor that we deserve :o
