I was just wondering what the procedure is for going to a doctor in the UK. Do you have to sign up with one first, or can you just get an appointment to see one and go? Approx how long does it take to get an appointment?
I'm a British Citizen, but I've spent only a few months in the UK in my life, so I've never been to a doctor in England, and I am moving there next month. I'm hoping not to have to go to a doctor until my current prescriptions run out, but I'd love to know the procedure in case I have to go sooner.
For me registering was really easy.
I went to the surgery, filled out a registration form and could make appointments for myself. I've been really lucky that I've never had to wait to see a GP. I call in the morning and get a same day appointment in most cases.
However, if your 'current prescriptions' are met or clomid, I would go as soon as I get here because your family doctor isn't likely to prescribe it.
I had to fill in a registration form (saying where you live, any current meds that type of thing). Then i had to have an appointment to see the Practice Nurse to get urine samples, general check up. Then i was ok to see a gp

I have the first week sorted so at least I won't be homeless for a while Last time I was in the UK I started off by staying with family, but this time I am doing it myself! At least kind of by myself as this time I am travelling with a friend
a haha, welcome to the ever frustrating world of the NHS. I'm a British citizen born and raised in NZ so yeah, lets just say the NHS came as a bit of a shock to us when we arrived 9 years ago.
Signing up is relatively pain free if you can find a doctor accepting new patients but depending on where you live, that may be easier said than done (honestly, where I am NOWHERE is accepting new patients, it blows my mind it really does. )
That said, i'm bitter and resentful toward the NHS so don't let my bile scare you too much.

I'm hoping I don't need to go too soon! I'm from New Zealand too where going to a dr is easy. I've never heard of a drs not accepting new patients! But then NZ doesn't have quite the same population as England. I have heard that dentists are hard to get in to in England so I made sure I went for a checkup last month.
Getting really nervous now as it's such a huge move! Changing currency to the GB Pound hurts!
here is a link for you, for the nhs. Near the bottom of the first page you can enter details to find a gp. I know you arent here now, but it may come in handy later on
