I belive that most the women here have Hashi's type hypothyroidism (thyroiditis). As I understand it, we have antibodies that attack our thyroid, leaving us with too little circulating thyroid hormone.

I was dx'd with Hashis early in 2002 but Endo won't give meds for it, said one day my thyroid will fail altogether and THEN he would prescribe, as "luick" would have it I called today about getting a followup visit since I haven't seen him in a year and eh doesn't take my insurance so now I can go see someone else. Hopefully they will be a little bit more cutting edge about treatment of Hashis, maybe the Dx of PCOS earlier this year will help a bit too!

I was dx'ed w/Hashi's in early '96 when my youngest was about 5 mos old.
I believe that I have had pcos since my teens.I have always had the hair on my chin and very abnormal periods (I thought I was normal..LOL) but I was always thin until now..errr!
what test do they do to detect hashimoto? the doc only tested my tsh! is the treatment different between that and hypothyroidim? I think when I see my gyno on wednesday I am going to ask to be refered to an endo!
Hi Andrea
I am not exactly sure what the name of the test is..it's some kind of antibody test.I wasn't very proactive with my health care at that time....not like I am now..LOL...
Hope everything is alright.

A thyroid antibodies test is used to diagnose Hashi's. Also Free T3 and Free T4 are necessary, to determine how much T4 your body is converting to T3. A person with Hashi's typically goes through periods of hyperthyroid alternating with hypo, until eventually the thyroid burns out and you become completely hypo.
For more excellent info about this and hypothyroid in general, I suggest you read through the many posts on this thyroid thread from another board. You can also post questions there; Nonstickpam, a very knowledgeable Hashi sufferer herself who is also a patient advocate, very generously gives advice and will help you interpret your blood tests and recommend what tests you may need.
