Question Does anyone take Yaz and Metformin together?

If so how is it working for you? And how many mg of Met are you taking? Just wondering if it is common to take both... (If not TTC)

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to SC!

I just started taking Yaz and have been taking Met since June. I was previously on Yasmin, and I switched to Met and Spiro. Because of bleeding problems, I needed hormonal treatments and had to stop the Spiro. The bleeding stopped, but I unfortunately have a rather large ovarian cyst and was put on Yaz in addition to 1500mg per day of Met.

I`m keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well and am not anticipating any problems. I`m very sensitive to medications, but since I had no problems with Yasmin or Met alone, I`m hoping the combo works for me.

I have seen in the signatures of some cysters that they are on both, and I`m now one of them.

Also, I read a study that compared cysters on BCPs, Met, and both for a four month period. The cysters taking both had, on average, lost more weight than those taking one or the other. I lost weight with Yasmin, and hope I can do the same with Yaz and Met!

IŽll let you know how it goes!

I'm on 1500 mg of Met a day and I started on Yaz 2 months ago. So far, I've had no problems with this combination at all. I just went to a new OBGYN yesterday and he's had great luck with this combination so he kept me on it.

Just an update. . .

Everything's still going well with the Yaz and Met combo. So far so good. My appetite is a little bit supressed (but I DO NOT see that as a negative side effect as I'm still eating well/enough). I've lost 7lbs in the past week (which may also be due to stress) and my skin is clearing up. TMI. . .I do have a little spotting, but that's normal the first month on BCPs.

I'm so glad this thread exists, I have been trying all sorts of things to get my hormones in balance. I've been on Metformin for over 7 years now - I was at 500mg 2x's a day for the first 5 yrs. Then I had an episode with non-stop bleeding - period lasted 85 days before any medication stopped it. I was then diagnosed with Cancer of the Uterus and placed on Megace 80mgs daily by OB/GYN and I was still taking the Metformin by Endocronologist. I had surgery D&C to clear uterus and send cells to pathology that confirmed the cancer. I started a weight loss program Medifast at the same time Oct 2005 and I had lost 68lbs by Mar 2006. My Endo then took me off Metformin, OB kept me on Megace - I started to regain the weight about 5lbs per month for the next year 11 months. In Jan 2007 my Endo ran another series of glucose tests and put me back on Metformin only the dosage was doubled to 2000mg daily. I thought finally I can get back to losing weight because during all of this time I never stopped the diet on Medifast. Just when I thought things were looking up in Mar 2007 my OB took me off the Megace and put me on 10mg Provera 2wks per month. My weight has been fluctuating up & down with the same 10lbs. ever since. Today my OB had decided to try Yasmin vs. putting me back on Megace because of the weight gain side effect of Megace. However, her fear is that the Yasmin may not keep the cancer cells from redeveloping in my uterus and I'm scared to death right now. I have never had good luck with BC's - I was first placed on them when I was 23 and I'm now 43. When I was put on BC's to try to control my irregular periods is when my weight problems started. I've tried at least 5 different types then when I turned 30 and was married trying to have a baby is when I was first told that I might have PCOS but it was called Stein-Leventhal syndrom back then. After serveral unsuccessful tries to get pregnant and a divorce I came across another doctor that diagnosed the PCOS and started the metformin 7 years ago. My weight is really out of control and no matter what I do I can't seem to lose the weight and keep it off, mood swings are at an all time high very depressed, Insulin Resistant - almost uncontrollable sugar & carb cravings. I have the acne, skin tabs, darkening of the neck, cheeks, arm pits, breast, inner thigh - extremely dry skin, increased facial hair - mostly jawline & chin very course hair, thinning hair from the forhead to top of my scalp.

I feel as if this is a curse that I will never shake loose - I'm miserable and ready to just give up and give in - this is no way to live.

Can anyone provide any words of encouragement that this combination might work?
