Default Does Everyone with PCOS have Infertility Problems?

It wasn't until a couple of months ago that it hit me that I might be infertile, and it's scaring me to death. I'm only 21 and I'm not trying to conceive yet, but of course one day I would love to have children. A couple of months ago I had unprotected sex (I know-stupid of me) and I went through a small scare because I'm irregular and didn't have a way of knowing if I was pregnant or not. I took a pregnancy test and fortunately it came out negative. And then it hit me...maybe it's going to be difficult for me to get pregnant when the time comes. If this is the case, is it treatable? Please tell me there's hope!

Hi,when were you diagnosed with pcos?I was last year and am now trying ttc.Like you i was worried about not being able to concieve but my doctor told me that i had a really good chance due to my age,im 25,she said i had loads of years ahead of me to try and that there were lots of options for me.I am at the moment trying a drug called clomid wihich helps ovulation so im hoping this works.
I would say please dont just have unprotected sex if your not ready to get pregnant to see if you are fertile or not as it may just happen.
I hope that this helps, but im new to all this really so have alot to learn myself.x

I know someone with PCOS who got pregnant naturally... so no, it doesnt mean you are infertile

You could have problems conceiving in the future and may need some "help" but there is a lot of hope.

Symptoms can vary between each woman. Ive heard of lots to have the infertile problem but there are so many options that has and can help!! Some women are not infertile though. Dont lose hope it can happen naturally or with meds but either way its not impossible! I conceived before I even knew I had pcos so obviously med free. Sadley I miscarried but I still have hope Take care and I hope this helps <3

I've gotten pregnant naturally everytime I have knowingly ovulated and DH has been home. For me, annovulation is my enemy, I only ovulate an average of once a year, which means some years, not at all. There was only one time is 16 medicated cycles that I ovulated and that time, I didn't get pregnant.

Thanks to all who answered. Well, I only get my period about 3 times a year, which probably means I'm not completely infertile but I'll have a hard time trying to conceive right? Well at least I'm glad there are lots of options available now, because I'd really like to have a child of my own.
nikki82, I'm not officially diagnosed with PCOS yet but I'm pretty sure I have it as I have most of the symptoms: irregular period, excess body hair, thinning/falling hair, I tend to carry weight around my waist, and cysts. And I didn't have unprotected sex just to find out if I was fertile or not, it just hit me later that it would probably be difficult for me to get pregnant when the time comes. But then again maybe I'm overreacting because it wasn't completely unprotected and my chances of getting pregnant then were very very very low.

There are a lot of options open to you when you are ready (maybe about 6 months before you are ready will be best to start.) When I am unmedicated, don't exercise much and eat what I want, I get 3-4 periods a year. They are ovulatory- I conceived @ 19 accidentally- and so I was not truly infertile even then.

When I cut carbs, add vitex & take metformin (you'll hear a LOT about metformin if you prowl around here much) I get periods every month and am of apparently high fertility (conceived the first month that we tried in both Dec & June.)

Of course, there are ladies on here, depending on how badly they are affected/where their weights are/other factors that need assistance (read about Clomid & IUI.)

I talk about me to show you that you can almost certainly have kids, whether it takes a little effort or a lot!!

No, not everyone with PCOS has infertility problems. Some do, and some don't. You won't really know until you try and conceive.

I have PCOS and we have been TTC for 18 months now. I pretty much knew from the first month trying that something was wrong because I was charting and would not get very much of a temp rise. But because my cycles were 30-40 days my doctors wouldn't listen to me until I reached the 1 year TTC mark. When I reached that point they still wouldn't listen to me. It took going to a GYN on a referral about period pain in order to get into see a Reproductive Endocrinologist... Now we are making progress and I just got officially diagnosed with PCOS last Wednesday but we have to do IUI because we have MFI too. They said if it wasn't for the MFI then we would not be going to IUI yet.... so I think it is different for everyone. The only thing I can say is never ever let a doctor tell you it is nothing when you know something is wrong.
