I did some research on PCOS and testostrone. The research indicated that losing weight and following a low-carb diet decreases testosterone levels.
With the decrease of testosterone, will your hair grow back?
Depends what hair you're talking about.
If you've a beard and you reduce your testosterone levels from levels which would be normal for a male to levels which would be normal for a female, then your beard growth rate will decline greatly and laser etc. might more or less get rid of it.
If you're talking about male pattern baldness which is common among women with pcos, then the answer is perhaps some of it might grow back -- but not all that likely.
In both cases the result is much the same as in a male who's castrated as an adult.
Then the answer is perhaps, to some extent. Especially if you get hormone levels back to the female range at a very early stage before the male-pattern baldness has established itself for any length of time.
To quote the male comparison, when an adult male is castrated (and no male hormones administered from other sources) all further hair loss from male pattern baldness normally ceases, but hair that's already been lost doesn't regrow. Hormonally, a man like that is in much the same situation hormonally as a menopausal woman.
Some people regrow some of their hair and some people don't. Everyone that I have conversed with on this board has grown some of their hair back. I think Kat grew most of her hair back. It varies from person to person. I have noticed with my self that the more weight I lose the less the symptoms are and that includes the hair loss. I have lost 28 pounds since I have been on 2000 mg of metformin er which has been almost 2 years and I don't loose as much hair anymore but I still loose some.

I guess the whole point is that you can probably prevent the hair from falling out, but once it has fallen out, the hair folicle might be dead. My hair is not falling out any more, but it has fallen out to a noticeable degree on the crown of my head. You can see it when the sun is shining on my head. I am no longer as self concious about it as I used to be, but I remember crying on my wedding day because the hair dresser put so much hair spray in my hair that you could see a lot of my scalp.
I am currently on 1500mg of metformin and I am following the Atkins diet. I hope I don't lose any more hair. I will be devastated.
