Question Does IR lead to Diabetes even if you are on Met?

Hi! I just was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin Resistance. I was put on Met. I am really scared because diabetes runs on both sides of the family. Do you ultimately develop diabetes if you are IR, even if you are on Metformin? ANy info would be a big help!

Having PCOS and Insulin Resistance does NOT automatically mean you will become a diabetic some day. Does it mean that you are at greater risk? Probably. However, if you follow a good diet and exercise you can do a lot to prevent getting full blown diabetes.

As far as Met goes, it can keep your sugars lower, but it isn't a definate that you won't get Diabetes anyway.

HTH!

VioletCaille..I am in the same boat as you

I was DX with PCOS and IR over 2 years agoby my GYN. I was told to watch my diet, exercise and I should be just fine. After 2 years of frustration, this same doctor send me on to an Endo.

My current blood work proves that my diet and exercise has kept my IR from getting out of hand. (My triglcerides have gone from 277 to 62!) I was told that had I not been modifying my carb intake and walking everday, I would certainly be a full blown diabetic. The only reason my blood sugar is somewhat elevated is because I have too much insulin that is not working properly. I am currently taking 1500mg of Glucophage working my way up to 2000mg. Being in a very high risk group (my father takes Glucophage as well as insulin shots and my mother is battling with high blood pressure, high cholestrol and elevated blood sugar), I require the additional help of the medication.

Let the medicine help you but make sure you help yourself first.....I know sometimes its difficult NOT to eat carbs. I have found myself not attending some social functions that center around food (these are very commom where I'm from) just so I won't be tempted. I have alot of living left to do and I find myself getting stronger everyday. I have even noticed how much more sensitive my friends and social circle has become to my situation.

Have faith and love yourself....I hope this helped.

I also have PCOS w/IR & am on met. I am currently 9 months pregnant & have gestational diabetes requiring insulin injections twice daily. Despite being on the met my whole pregnancy, I developed the diabetes anyway. My RE says I have a 90% chance of developing diabetes later in life. I am 31 by the way. There is good news for us all though. A diabetes vaccine containing a particular protein has already been developed & is being tested on humans right now! Experts expcet the vaccine to be available in 2 years or so. That means no diabetes for anyone! It's like a dream come trrue for people who are I/R. It will not help people who are already diabetic though. God I LOVE technology! I swear I would freak if I had to give myself shots my whole life!
