Wondering if anyone has had success with laser for facial hair that is dark, but fine.
I have hair on the sides of my face a that is dark brown but it is fine, not coarse. I went to a laser place today and the girl said there is only a 50/50 chance of it working (that was with the Aurora). She pretty much told me not to waste my money. She said it only works on coarse hair. I am so depressed! I thought for sure this was the answer. The hair is very visible in the sunlight and I just hate it! I am not sure if I should take her word for it or continue looking. She wasn't very helpful, so I'm not sure if maybe it was just a bad place...
I have recently had laser done. I have very coarse hair and was told that dark coarse hair is the best for the laser. He also told me that fine hair can be treated, but it is usually much harder and not totally as successful. There are many new lasers around. I would check into places that have other types of lasers as I have read that there are now lasers that can treat dark skinned women also without the threat of losing pigment in their skin. I would have to double check for you, but I believe the laser that was used on me was called Lightsheer? I will look around for the info on the other lasers for you and maybe there is one that works better for the fine hair. Good luck, Niki

Bumbleberry~ I just checked his website and he says his lasers work on darker skin and fine hair. I have to call him to make sure that that is the name of the laser he uses. His office is closed right now, but I will ask him and let you know what he said. Niki

I was doing some research on the internet, and it appears that the Aurora is a pulsed light laser (old technology) and not very good. Lightsheer is a "third generation" laser and one of the best, so hopefully it will work.
I guess there is a lot of variation between the different lasers and the competence of the people working at these places, so
I have a consultation at another place tomorrow that has the Lightsheer. Hopefully I will be able to find out...
The man I am going to in the future uses a IPL or coolglide???? I don't know, that's what my gyno told me. But from what I read on the inet, any hair with pigment should be able to be treated by the IPL I think unless it is white. Don't know- Oh yeah, type in Kitty's consumer's beware board in google and it will give you the KCB site. It's very good, and people are having success with dark fine hairs on that board and I guess even a few with blonde hairs. Give it a try- I have the exact same problem to Bumbleberry and I want to know if the Coolglide works on fine dark hairs-- so anybody out there know?

Here is some info from my old dermatologist in Edmonton (Dr. Don Groot). He is pretty renowned in Canada and was the first person in Edmonton to offer laser, quite a few years ago, before it was common, so I think it is reliable info:
------------------------
Intense Pulsed Light: (Aurora) These systems are flash lamps, producing a spectrum of light energy rather than laser light. Intense pulsed light systems tend to stun rather than kill hair follicles so that there is often an unacceptable amount of hair regrowth, even after many treatments.
First Generation: Ruby 694 nanometer (Epilasser, Epitouch, Chromos)
Second Generation: Alexandrite 755 nanometer (Epitouch ALEX, Photogenica LIPR, GentleLASE)
Third Generation: Diode 800-810 nanometer (LightSheer, Apex)
Fourth Generation: The most advanced, Altus CoolGlide, uses the longest available, deeper penetrating 1064 nanometer wavelength. Altus CoolGlide reaches even the deepest hair roots, which can be 4-6 mm below the skin surface in some cases.
---------------------
So, Altus CoolGlide is the latest and greatest. However, the LightSheer is FDA approved to say "permanent" hair removal so it must be decent (?). Not sure about the fine hair situation, but I think either of these may work for it.
I have noticed that some of the cheaper laser places are using the old technology, so it seems it is not a good idea to pick a place based on price.
Well, went to the consultation and the technician said she did not think the LightSheer would work at all on my fine, dark facial hair and told me of her own experience with it.
She was of East Indian descent with black hair and told me she had the exact same problem as me, with dark, fine hair on her face. She had it treated with the LightSheer and said all the hair grew back and when it did it changed and was no longer fine but now long and coarse - she said 4 inches long!! She said she regrets doing it and emphasized that unless the hairs on your face grows in as thick as a man's do, don't get laser!! :-(
She suggested electrolysis (but there is too much hair to consider doing this) and threading (ouch!), and also said the Softlight Laser might be an option. It is not permanent but she said its good for people with fine hair and some people find the hair turns white and falls out and it can last for quite a while, depending on the individual. It is cheaper than the other lasers but you have to keep going back....
Anyway, I'm pretty depressed that laser is not going to work. If anyone else has fine hair and has had good results, pls let me know....perhaps the Altus CoolGlide is the answer??
