Does less PCOS symptoms = better chance of conceiving?
Hi- I am VERY new (just diagnosed on Friday) and sort of just in shock. I was on BCP for 3 years, went off in February 2008 and then only got 3 periods since. I am normal size (5'7, 140 lbs) and have always carried an extra weight in my mid-section but other then that and the missed periods, I don't have any of the other problems. I have heard on different sites that if you don't have a lot of PCOS symptoms you probably have a more mild case which therefore is easier to manage. But I also read several places that Clomid and/or Metformin doesn't work as well for thin PCOS patients so it sounds like it might be harder.
I am going to break the news to my family tonight and just trying to find any positive news I can share with them. If anyone has a similar story or positive experience to share, I would definitely appreciate it!
(Did you all become obsessed with reading this site after DX? I really need to get back to work!)
I'm just diagnosed as well (in Oct). Also don't have any other symptoms apart from irregular periods... and I AM addicted to this site! There's just so many information I kept reading everyday from every cyster's experience.
Are you on any medications? I just finished with my first round Provera and got my AF 2 days after the last pills (which I believe is very good, considering some cysters still don't get AF after). My next step is Clomid which I should start this Thurs & I have GYN appt next Tuesday - I believe to check my ovulation. So far my body is responding really well, and I hope you're right with the "mild case = easier to treat".
I was told I have PCOS on November 11th. From what my doctor said she has several patients with no symptoms at all and haven't had any luck getting pregnant and she has a paitient with the ugliest looking ovaries and a full beard that has five children.

oh, shoot I guess I shouldn't get over-confident...
Hey Angeliki, I want to send this to you to give you hope. My true and very honest opinion is that when I was diagnosed, it was a true blessing to find out what is really going on with my body. I know my body SO well right now, and without PCOS, I would have never taken the time to learn more about "me".
I encourage you to continue researching (and yes, I became very addicted to looking at this site and others to inform myself) PCOS and find out what is right for you.
My story, was dx Sept. 07.. I decided living on medication for life was not for me. Which is reality with PCOS, you can't take meds, get better (symptoms go away) and think they will not come back. If there was another way I was going to find it! So I started doing some research on what foods to eat and what lifestyle to follow. I am doing a Low Glycemic diet, which is very good for PCOS patients and just people in general looking to lead a healthy lifestyle. Food is amazing for what it can do for your body - good or bad, it really is a key ingredient to everything getting better. More energy, I now have my period EVERY month since October 07 (I got it 2 weeks after starting the Low Glycemic Lifestyle) I am ovulating every month now (however not trying to get pregnant yet- not married yet- but want to be 100% ready for when I do want to conceive). I have also lost 76 lbs, now even though this is not your case that you need to loose weight, you will loose the excess weight in your mid section, more than likely have your period regularly, again not your case-- but all of my symptoms of PCOS are gone! It feels amazing!
As you get started with this process, naturally you will find out what's best for you and make your own decision. This is just what I recommend. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
This is not an easy thing to go through, but know you are bigger than it... and it can be a blessing if looked at correctly. It's better to know now, than have challenges conceiving and not know why and get frusterated. There is great information on here as you know, good luck telling the family tonight. There is a booklet of information for family and friends on here, can't think of where right now. But it would help you to explain.
This can be overcome, and women with PCOS DO get pregnant! Just learn as much as you can, apply as much as you can, and you can do it!

Doing Low GI diet as of Sept. 07. DX with PCOS in Sept 07' as well.
Started at a size 24, now a size 14. My waist was 44", now it's 32".
I am on no medication, just diet and exercise.
Thank you all for your support and information! I encourage all of you to do a Low Glycemic diet!
FAN- Thanks for sharing your story... you sound just like me! I am taking prometrium now to get my period and hopefully it comes right after b/c nothing can get going until AF comes! I am already seeing a RE because my gyno referred me since I want to become pregnant soon. He is making my husband and I go through all of these tests so he he has a complete assessment of our situation before advising me what to do next. I am guessing I probably will go on Clomid too. I will try anything and everything, medications, acupuncture, weight loss...whatever it takes!
Sweetstar- thanks for the words of encouragement! I really appreciate it. I wasn't sure if I should start dieting or not since I am not overweight to begin with... I could definitely lose a few lbs but I already eat very well and work out a lot so I would need to go on a strict diet to be any skinnier I think. But starting yesterday I am trying to do the low GI thing... it can't hurt as long as I don't over do it.
i was diagnosed almost 6 years ago (20yo) after only having 2 periods ever. been on bc since, but i am coming off at the end of the month to ttc. i asked my regular ob/gyn about drugs and she said i should just watch and wait to see if i resume cycles on my own (i kind of doubt this). i'm really small and my only symptom is amenorrhea good luck!
I just got dx in Aug 08, and I was also in shock when I found out. I went off bc in Jan. 08 (after about 7 years) and had a normal period. Then I had two really irregular periods and haven't gotten it on my own again since May 08. It was difficult telling family and close friends. I am currently on met 1500mg, and it still isn't working for me, so I'm thinking about starting clomid. Hang in there, and keep reading and researching so that you can understand pcos better and know what may or may not work for you. It gets easier in some ways, but I'm still struggling with the emotions that come along with this complicated disease. There is a 90% chance of getting pregnant...it just may take longer than you want it too, which is the most difficult part.

I was diagnosed with pcos several years ago and I still have a hard time getting my arms around pcos. The fact that I haven't previously been overweight has complicated things as well. My advice is to read everything you can on the topic and to pay close attention to your body and what it's telling you.
