I've been on met (500mg) since February 09 and i recently asked my doctor...well his nurse to up it. He has me checking my blood sugar every day...the nurse informed me that all my BW was "normal" and then she asked me what my sugar has been and i told her its been btw 90& 120....she said if they were to up my met it would drop too low (about 60). so my question is does it matter if you are IR or not when it comes to met and PCOS...and if so if im not IR then why did my doctor prescibe me met? im sooooooo confused!!!!! help plz

I am NOT IR and i take 1000mg of met daily, and i am looking to UP my dosage. My father is a pharmacist and he told me Met is a drug the will not cause a lowering of blood sugar if you do not need it. I hope this helps i would def. talk to your doctor (not the nurse, because most of the time they do not know what they are talking about, No offense to any nurses out there, just personal expierence.)

With PCOS you should be taking at least 1000mg - 2000mg of met a day. It has more to do with insulin than blood sugar. Insulin is your master hormone, and controls all the other hormones in your body. YOU NEED A REPRODUCTIVE ENDO that specializes in PCOS. Until I went to one, I had so many problems. Most doctors have NO CLUE how to treat PCOS.
I'd ask to speak with the doctor, or schedule a consultation appointment. The doctor clearly knew something about Metformin. Ignore the nurse for now. Your current dose is normal for starting, but I don't know many folks who stay there. Usually, people work up to 1500mg or so. If you aren't happy with your doctor's response (not the nurse) then you may need to look elsewhere.

Well ladies I went to see my FNP yesterday, she actually the one who wrote the presciption, she was unsure of what the appropriate dosage was (funny i know more about PCOS than she did) anywho long story short she increased my dosage to 1000mg [500mg twice a day] with two months worth of refills i have an appt with my gyn in august. Im still on BCP and it seems unnatural to me. DBF and I are not ttc but i dont feel like taking them is treating my PCOS, it's giving me a period and preventing me from ovulating. No help with any other symptoms of PCOS beside an absent AF. idk i guess im just ranting, but I really want to let met work if that makes any sense. I mean besides some minor weight loss, the BCP kinda make it impossible to see if its working. thanks again! ill have to see about an RE!
