Hi all, i have had pcos for 15years now, i have all the symptoms, very overweight, very very hairy you name it ive got it there and lose of hair, had acne but its on holiday for now, loss of periods, IR, and all the other bits that go with it, my family have a few fertility problems, in particular a cousin who has just been diagnosed with pcos, does anyone think this is hereditory, would love to know if others have members of there family with the same thing
Alot of cysters have relative's that have PCOS or some form of a fertility issue etc.... I think I can safely say that it runs in the family!! HTH

Yep - I think it does run in families. I had two aunties who had lots of fertility problems - and my mum, though never diagnosed with PCOS had all the same symptoms when she was my age as I'm having now!!

I was told by my doctor that it comes from the fathers side of the family, since its male hormone related...
But my Mum had hormonal problems (too much female hormone and cysts in her womb) and my elder sister has hormonal problems and my younger sister shows early signs of PCOS.
i dont know anyone in my family that has pcos or any fertility probs i did hear that it comes from your dads side dont know where mine has come from and nobody seems to understand about it in my family
My mother was never diagnosed with PCOS but had what I now realise to be the symptoms all her life and she developed diabetes late in her life. I read somewhere that it is passed through families, can't remember where, but both my sons suffered very early male pattern baldness ( when they were 19 and 22) and have blood sugar problems, so I nag them to be careful about their diets and get checked every so often. If either of them have any little girls, I would watch very carefully for any early signs of PCOS. Just one beautiful little grandson so far!
There is a lot of research to say the PCOS does run in families.
My mum hasn't formally been diagnosed but has all of the symptoms i have and also had problems ttc. My cousin has been diagnosed with PCOS.
Apparently, although it is quite likely that our daughters will develop PCOS, there is reseach in progress now to see if there is a male form of it, like dellwood mentioned with male patterned baldness, early diabites etc...i don't think they have put thier finger on what yet but i am sure in a few years time we will know exactly who it will effect and be able to pre-empt problems and hopfully aviod diabities etc...
