Hey everyone! I've read a lot of posts, but this is actually my first post...so bear with me LOL
Anyway, I'm in the process of being diagnosed with PCOS. I've went to doctors to doctor. Been put on birth control to try to "fix" it.. all that jazz. I have soo many symptoms it's unreal and finally i went to a women hospital (a clinic there) where they have been researching pcos, doing studies etc. SO they're doctors are very informed.
Anyway, I have blood tests and an ultra sound I'm getting done in December. Then I will go back with the results...and the doctor will decide the diagnosis and of course medication.
She said she'd put me on glucophage if i do have PCOS. There is no doubt in my mind that i do.
The big thing that has been really getting me down is my weight. I even eat a lower carb diet, and exercise. but I still can't seem to really lose the weight...
will the gluchophage/ metaformin (sp?) really help once I am on it??? I hear that is does. But I still cannot look opimistic about it. I need to really hear from those of you who have seen results...
It's just so depressing to try so hard to get the weight off and really don't get anywhere...
Metformin affects everyone differently. Some cysters have lost weight on it, and some haven't.
When I first started taking the side effects made me sick, and I totally lost my appetite. All that resulted in my weight loss.
But I do feel so much better on it.
If you get put on it, good luck.

Thanks! I guess I'm just scared. I see a lot of women who do lose weight. Some who say they gain. It's frustrating and scary all at the same time. I guess every women is different and I'll see the results of the medication once i take it... yikes, just very worried about it all...
I went on met about 3 1/2 weeks ago and have already lost 5 pounds. I've been eating pretty much the same, although in the last day or so, my appetite has been low.
I've been on met for four months now, I have lost about 12 pounds.
Here are the reasons I have lost the weight, and reasons I haven't lost anymore:
1) Met makes me have the runs every time I eat anything that is carbs, sweet, salty, high in fat, (basicly everything I eat)
2) because of #1 I hate eating. I used to love it, now I dread it. Specially when I go out to eat with family or friends cause I know I will be rushing off to the bathroom as soon as the check is paid.
3) I take my met half way through eating my meal to help decrease the nausea that I feel when I take it. (BELIEVE ME IT HELPS) but.. after I take it.. I just don't feel like eating the rest of my meal
4) I'm not losing weight cause I am in school 19 credit hours and working a full time graveyard job. What this means is.. I eat junk all the time. I know it is wrong, but I'm too lazy to figure out to make healthy stuff on my days off. And.. fast food, junk food, and vending machines are SOOOOO EASY!
5) I walk A LOT. which helps with some of the weight. But
6) I don't exercise at all. No time. When I only get 2-4 hours of sleep a day... exercising is not a top priority.
7) I PROMISE TO BE BETTER AT ALL THE ABOVE... ........ ................. ................................ ...................... after the holidays.

Well i am glad to hear the both of you have lost weight on Met. I'm so sorry to hear that you don't have much time to yourself, or for sleep. Wow. I am a college student too. But don't have nearly as many hours as you, and only a part time job. I have free time.
And wow, are those side effects for everyone? I was looking forward to Met, and now... yikes. I'm kinda worried. But, I guess I'll see. everyone women is different and it probably effects every women differently. Well i hope things start to look better for you, and thanks for the information
I think everyone is different, but the glucophage/metaformin doesn't really bother me (the first week it made me nauseous, but after that it's like taking nothing in my experience). I did finally take the 40 lbs off that I was carrying around just prior to starting this medication. The only thing that has helped me lose weight is paying attention to calories. I ate 1200-1500 daily while losing ( I tried to stick with 1200, but it was too hard some days), plus unlimited vegetables...I ate 3 meals & 2 snacks & I found that eating throughout the day helped my metabolism big time...to maintain I'm eating about 2000, but I'm finding that on the glucophage I can get away with eating a little more. Exercise helped... I walked about 4 miles about 4-5 times a week...good luck...
This is my 2nd week and I am starting to notice some difference already. All last week I was nauseous but this week now that I have moved up to 2x a day I am feeling much better. I noticed it is getting to the point I can only eat so much and I am full and don't want nothing else either. I am also having very little s/e also.

I just wanted to say, that I too have lost about 6.5 lbs since starting Metformin 15 days ago, but that's also in part of me cutting out 90% of sugars in my diet and getting a bit of light excerise, even if it's walking everywhere, or least walking to the mall across the way instead of bussing it.
The first week I had bad nausea so I took the met with a meal or even a hearty snack, like a nutragrain bar. For be the best part about being on Met is that it makes me know when I am full instead of over-eating, so I feel fuller and it lasts longer.
Much luck goes out to you and I hope that Met works for you. Please let us know how everything goes!
After initial side-effects, I lost 30 pounds on Met, and it also helped with the other PCOS symptoms. I am very happy with met I hope you can be too!!
Good Luck
Jessie

Love this site....always felt alone in this PCOS nightmare....really enjoying the success stories and finding common ground with you all...it a real blessing!
I have recenlty officially been dxd with PCOS and started on met. just last week. The day after my first pill I had my period!! Lasted 3 days and I feel pretty good. I am only on 500mg (which seems to be low from what I am learning here??) but the results look so promising I am wondering if maybe I am setting myself up for disappointment? I am sooooooo hoping that Met helps me get my weight in control (have lost 120lbs three times in the last 10 years, now down another 50lb since January and working on the 4rth...starving of course) as I know its so unhealthy to yo yo like this. I have never been at my goal weight (always about 50lbs off) OMG to stand and feel hipbones...how incredible is that??
I used to lose weight easier, but in the last 10 yrs ...I have to live on 600 calories or look out! Last year I gained the 120lbs back in about 8 months...I rarely ate more than 3 meals a day...but apparenlty 2 slices of pizza counts as more than 3 meals for me LOL! My hirsutism is really a disability for me ...some days its so bad I can't bear the thought of going to work...its so thick and course and burried beneath the skin that makeup does little to conceal it. I am starting my second round of laser hair removal in December (had wonderful success with it 2 years ago...skin was smooth as silk after 6 treatments!) but I am bascially back to where I started. I am hoping Met makes the treatment work faster, cheaper and longer if not permanent. I wonder if its just weightloss that possibly can do that...if at all? It seems when I diet it gets better, but then its a trade oof because my hair starts falling out...double edged sword...anyone else finding this?
I am really hopeing Metformin is the answer....I am wondering what real success you all have really noticed (if any)? Is the most common result getting your period and thats about it? Or does it really help with weightloss (which the lack thereof, I understand being the underlying cause of all PCOS woes) and hirsutism. Lastly...does low carbing really help specifically for PCOS suffers...or is its just because its the lastest diet that is getting the most media attention?
Sorry for the long winded message...Im so thrill to find people in a simular boat! Always felt really alone in this...and so differnt...specially with the hair problem...having size 12 feet didn't help the "she man" complex either LOL!!
Anyway....I hope we all get where we wanna be I could go on and on...but Ill stop now...lol
May all your hair, periods and weight be all you hoped!

ive been on met for aver 2 years. I remember when I stated I couldn't eat anything. Thanksgiving I just cried I had two nice meal one at my inlaws and one at my best friends and both went out of there way to make some of my favorites--for lunch i had a teaspoon of mashed potates and a small piece of turkey-- for supper a little more turkey and a sliver of pie that i couln't finish. Boy that didn't last long enough!!! I may have initially lost 10lbs but i did gain it back and havent lost much weight over the course of the last 2 yrs
I think the key is watching what you eat!!!!!
