I have a friend who's been TTCing for a couple of months.
She was off BCPs and charting for two months, had great looking charts with mid-cycle O's and 28-day cycles. After the second month, she had her period as normal. As the third cycle started, her temps were whacky. She had heavy bleeding on CD8, then again on CD13 and CD14. Continued whacky temps.
She called our midwife's office, and they did an HCG. It was 47 on CD18 (of cycle 3). Today is CD20, she's repeating the HCG on Friday, CD 22.
The midwife's office is telling her that the CD8 bleeding was probably a very early ovulation, and the CD13-14 bleeding was implantation. They're telling her that she's pregnant, but it's very early.
I think the more likely scenario is that she got pregnant on cycle 2, the embryo didn't implant properly, so she had what appeared to be a normal period. Then continued bleeding and whacky temps as her body continued to process the miscarriage into cycle 3.
She's really worried because she did some drinking earlier in cycle 3, and she doesn't want to think that affected implantation or that it could affect the baby if this does turn out to be a healthy pregnancy. She's beating herself up, but she THOUGHT she was drinking before ovulation would have even taken place. I told her the timing of the drinking was likely not a factor -- either she was pregnant on cycle 2 and it was not a healthy pregnancy from the start, or she got pregnant on cycle 3 and the drinking was too early to really affect that baby. She's so freaked out about the drinking right now, that I think she'd actually PREFER to hear that she's having a miscarriage.
I know she'll know more on Friday with the repeat beta numbers, but what do you think? Miscarriage or very early ovulation w/ unusual bleeding?
Tell her...definitely not to worry about the drinking....I got a bacterial infection on my honeymoon (but didn't know it)...and when I got back I thought I might be pregnant (deathly ill and not feeling well at all). So...I started fREAKING out thinking I just basically pickled this poor kid on my carribean honeymoon...umm, hello...can we say "rum drinks?"....LOL
The doc reassured me that in all her years of practice....she has come to the assumption that drinking past ovulation will not affect implantation or what have you. She even had a major alcoholic who was drinking a ton of vodka a day.....and she stopped drinking at 7 weeks.....
her view is that the baby isn't attached to you yet...at those early days...and that it is feeding off of itself until it attaches and the placenta develops. Not sure if it's true or not, but it made me feel better incase I was newly pregnant......I ended up with a parasitic infection, thanks to some bad fish I ate in Aruba....but hey....good to know!

It sounds a lot like my miscarriage in August - I wasn't having cycles tho. I was bleeding on/off - more on than off. I ended up getting a positive test - only because I tested before starting BCP's to control the bleeding.
i say wait to see her #'s... they may double as they should.....
don't worry about the drinking... it will be fine...

My guess would be what the midwife suggested, in which case this was a very strange cycle that ends extremely well.
If there is loss involved in your friend's case, it would not be due to alcohol... this early there is very little of our nourishment transferred to the little one. I was loaded on nice wine about two days before my bfp with Duncan. I read in the Dr Sears pregnancy book that it was okay, and I'll stick with that authority. His website might say something about it, and others surely do... she might feel better to read it.
Best wishes to your friend!

Thanks, guys. She got her repeat beta back and it was 1. So obviously a miscarriage. She's upset but doing OK. It's still early, and she says that now at least they know she CAN conceive. I appreciate your insights.
I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's loss. I had the same thing happen to me many years ago. BUT, the ray of hope, my older daughter was conceived right after that loss.
Please give your friend a huge hug for us and let her know that she's in our thoughts and prayers.
